My teenage son got given a gift voucher for a kayaking lesson here, and I thought it only right that I tag along to give him some company. He wasn’t embarrassed at all, no sirree ;)! Right down on the beach, we arrived for our hour on one of those gorgeous Brighton summer days — the sea was flat-ish, the sun was out, the beach was heaving! During your lesson you get use of a kayak(obviously!), a wetsuit and a very patient skilled instructor to show you the ropes. We were given the safety drill and a quick practice before we took to the waves. All I can say is: if you’ve never seen Brighton from the far end of the West Pier, get yourself down to Brighton Watersports. It’s a really beautiful sight, and one that most of us don’t get to see. All in all, this is a wonderful experience. With their knowledgeable staff, up-to-date equipment and reasonable prices, a trip down here is essential for locals and tourists alike…

A great shop to kit yourself out with a decent wetsuit, booties, hat and gloves in preparation for that great surf that hits Brighton once in a… well never actually, so this shop always strikes me as a bit misplaced given that the only ripple on the ocean is when a large man belly-flops from the pier. That said it’s a proper surf shop with DVDs, leashes, shades, mags, t-shirts and everything surfer related. Next door is the more active side of the business where you can rent kayaks, paddle boards and surfboards. They do lessons too if you want to master them more quickly.

Found on the seafront amongst the seafood stalls and art galleries, the Brighton Watersports offers kayak and wet suit hire, costal trips, mackerel fishing trips as well as classes and lessons in Eskimo rolls, basic kayaking, wake boarding and water skiing. Having moved from Hastings and doing a short sea kayaking course there, we developed a taste for it and stumbled on this club whilst wandering along the promenade last summer. For £10 you can hire a kayak for an hour, £20 for a half day and £35 for a full day. If you don’t want to go it alone you can hire a double for slightly more. Or if you have no idea what you’re doing but fancy having a go and learning the basics book onto a three hour course for £30. Other courses and lessons range from £15-£45. This summer we’ll mostly be kayaking and getting dragged behind a powerboat in a dingy for £15.

Staying on a surf tip, Brighton Watersports should be the first port of call if you’re thinking of taking up kayaking, bodyboarding, wakeboarding or surfing. Located on the sea-front between the West Pier and Brighton Pier, they offer a full range of individual and group lessons. They also hire and sell a wide range of boards and kayaks, wet suits, fins and everything else you could need if you’re going to brave the power of the sea. Shamefully, my brother and mum regularly dragonboat and I have yet to learn to paddle board or body board. Since I have the privilege of living by the sea, maybe I should make it my mission this summer!

Brighton Watersports is a good first port of call for all your Watersport related things, naturally. For £35 for the day you can hire out a kayaking, and without much further of ado, you can be out there ripping it up in the Brighton swell. Not bad. Brighton Watersports also has a large range of products for sale such as their large variety of stand up paddle boards, which are becoming increasingly popular in Brighton’s waters, so worth having a chat to them about these. For the more novelty Brighton summer fun, you can also hire out Ringo rides for £15 an hour. Quite expensive, but ridiculously, stupidly fun.

Can you guess what this business specialises in?! That’s right, water sports. Aren’t you intuitive? Well, this«does what it says on the tin» company is unrivalled(pretty much literally) when it comes to kayaking, wake boarding and the like. What’s the reason for this review? Well, I thought it best to bring to attention some of the great outdoor activities Brighton has to offer that we might sometimes neglect. Kayaking especially is a great way to spend an hour or so. Get that freedom of being out on the open waves without exerting the energy required by swimming; open your eyes to a new view of Brighton like an outsider observing from an aquatic lookout. Kayaking is great fun and something different. Yes you can kayak in other places, but not everywhere, so take to the open seas and make like a sailor for a while, you won’t be disappointed.
