I’m so excited I could do back-flips! Not only is Martin Parr the guest curator for the next Brighton Photo Biennial in Oct and Nov 2010 but he’s commissioned Zoe Strauss to come over from Chicago and take photos of the LGBQT community in Brighton. If you haven’t heard of her, Strauss is an immensely talented, young photographer who captures the dark underbelly of the U.S. with love and compassion. Her book America should appeal to fans of Nan Goldin, Larry Clarke and Terry Richardson. In keeping with the theme of New Documents and discovery, Parr has invited other emerging photographers and short film makers from Brazil, Asia, Latin America, Europe, Japan and North America. Some of them have been commissioned to work with local schools and community groups, others will be exhibiting new work in venues like Lighthouse, Fabrica and Brighton Museum and Art Gallery. Refreshingly, this BPB will also be frame-free with work directly pinned onto walls and other surfaces. I know it’s nearly a year away but I can’t wait.
