Had a fantastic time at the Maker Faire There was lots to see and do and it was fun seeing everyone setting up and being social. What a great venue too! I loved the space and it had a really warming vibe about it!

This was my first year of actually making it to the Mini Maker Faire, although I’ve been interested in it before. It was a bit like the school science fair but blown up a bit, and there were loads of cool things to look at. Some stuff was really techy and some was crafty, which made the whole thing really interesting… lots of juxtaposition there! I really liked seeing the kids who were super into programming and coding because I’m a front end web dev who started off when I was really young and made a career out of it, so it is just kind of cool for me to see, on a personal level. Kind of wish I had brought my friend’s kids with me or something because a lot of the activities looked really great and I’m sure they would have had a blast. Also I saw a life-sized dalek chasing some children– the mark of an A+ event.

The maker faire is an interesting event(probably even more interesting to kids to be honest) where the«makers» have stalls and show off various inventions, curiosities and crafts. A small band of Unilocalers were given access to the exhibition space the evening before general opening. This gave us a chance to chat to the various exhibitors( Unilocal amongst them) in a relatively calm environment before hordes of people descended on the Corn Exchange. Only about a third of the exhibitors took advantage of setting up the night before and as I wasn’t able to attend the main event only saw some of the wonders on offer(e.g. how to make your own smart watch). However those of us who felt inclined were able to enjoy a few beers, some pizza as well as the usual Unilocal freebies.
