This place is a Brighton institution and has saved me many a time when i’ve been too lazy to cook a dinner. A wide selection of pies from normal fare of Steak, Chicken and Mushroom to more exotic kind like Lamb and Mint and their great Beano pie. A few sweet pies also, plus quiches which are all reasonably priced. Get down here quick as its shut around 2.30,but is definitely worth the rush.

Best pie shop in Brighton. Excellent cornish pasty too(not on mondays). Friendly owner and staff. Institution of the downtrodden London road area.

(An excerpt from the adventures of Mr. Banger) «Good day Mr. Banger!» «Good day sir! To what do I owe the pleasure?» «Your fine pies my good man. I’ll have two of each!» «Two of each?» «Why yes. I see no reason not to gorge myself on these wonderful treats.» «I appreciate that but surely such gluttony will leave you rotting in hell?» «I can think of much worse ways to die.» «Perhaps but why risk it?» «What kind of question is that? With such lovingly cooked pastries for such reasonable prices, who would complain if hell where but a pie shop?» «I see your point.» «Of course you do. Now serve me my pies!» «Right away.» «Jiminy that was fast! I shall write much about this. Many will hear of your valour Mr. Banger. I bid you good day, as I’m off to the land of Qype. Keep up the fine work.»

Bangers is a perfect example of working class 1980s style stodge and I for one am unashamedly enamoured of it. It’s situated a, little too conveniently, close to a great chip shop smack bang in the middle of Baker Street. Stepping into the place is somehow like entering a scene from«Boys from the black stuff». Furthermore, unlike the gimmick laden«rustic» style pie shops in the centre of town you don’t tend find yourself paying excessive amounts of money for what is essentially simple workingman’s food. Be careful though, because as with the old fashioned attitude to service and price they have the same attitude to salt and fat content. This does make their pies incredibly tasty though and the selection is a little more exiting then you might expect. It’s not just steak or chicken by any means. They are constantly getting creative with things like the Beano and chicken curry pies while still providing the old staples. It’s definitely not cutting edge stuff but in many ways that’s the point. Work hard, eat pie, and keep it real.

I’ve got to go with Sophie in this. The key to enjoying Bangers is to think of it as a cheap dinner alternative rather than a take away place. I have to say I’ve never experienced such disappointment with this place but then again I may have accidentally timed my visits perfectly. Let’s leave temperature out of the equation for a minute. With such cheap but utterly dominant pies you’d be seriously picky to snub Bangers. On a number of occasions I’ve headed out of my way simply for the pleasure of their Beano pie, which includes beans, potato, sausage and onion. My mouth is now watering just thinking about it. I recommend stopping by at least once. You won’t get better value anywhere else.

Aaah Jack M, I feel your pain! Although I do empathize, I urge you to try again! When I first purchased a pie at Bangers, I was hungry, verging on starving and there was no way I was taking my pie home to heat it up. I too was disappointed. Cold steak is not something I personally enjoy. I suspect many people go through this strange and chilly initiation to Bangers! But once you realize that your pie is going to be cold and program your brain to stop thinking of Bangers as a takeaway, you will find peace with your pie. Although I don’t understand the lack of oven/microwave/heating device, I now use Bangers to pick up my dinner, rather than lunch on the go. Admittedly, this requires a degree of foresight and makes me frequent the place less, but once heated up, these pies are amazing! The fillings are chunky and substantial, the pastry is just the right consistency… mmmm, truly delicious! The steak pie and the vegetable pie are my faves, but there are about 10 options, including a sweet apple and blackberry one for afters! Definitely the best place to buy a pie(if you can live with not eating it immediately) and its really nice to know exactly where and how they are made! I’m now a big fan!

2 stars might well seem a bit harsh, especially as I can well imagine that some people may have had some amazing pie shaped experiences at Bangers, when all the variables are right. Let me explain. After a relatively hard days scouting around the Lewes Road reviewing and taking pictures, I walk down Baker Street, and spot what looks like a shop, which could turn into a favourite of mine. It’s small, it’s obviously not a chain, it’s beautifully simple, only selling pie, it’s cheap and best of all it’s all made on the premises and infront of you, in the same room. YES… Great. In fact on top of this, and undoubtedly a deal breaker for why I decided to plump for a pie, is that it’s bitterly cold outside, I’m also cold, and the idea of a lovely warming pie is just too good to resist. I go, after some deliberation, for a Leek and Bacon, which looks great. I hand over my £1.30, and admire my pie and myself for such an astute purchase, then I bite into the beautiful looking thing. WHATTTT???IT“S COLD. WHAT? WHY? Why would a shop that only sells pies. ONLYPIES. Sell cold pies. WHY? Surely they should invest in some sort of machinery to keep a pie warm.Please. I genuinely was very disappointed by this, nay, I was devastated. Everything up until that point had me excited, and then the damn bubble burst, spewing cold, leeky pie all over my face. The pie tasted alright, but to be honest the coldness didn’t make it that appetising, and I was simply to grumpy too try and make the best of the flavour anyway. I don’t know if they can put them in the microwave, but I wasn’t given the option, so I guess not. What a shame. Could have been a great pie.

I have diet and gone to pie heaven! This place is like Disney land for pastry lovers. They should build a huge hotel so people like me can stay and enjoy everything on sale. The window display is so sexy! And inside the pies are also bigger! The range of pies is huge. Lamb & mint, steak & ale to apple pies can be purchased here. The shop appears very clean and the staff are helpful. But, seriously this shop is playing with pie lovers minds. This is evidence that God exists!
