This is standard student catering at its finest. Open for only two and a half hours a day its crammed during lunch hours, as the prices are equal to the standard of food. It’s not always pasta and pizza though, as you can have such things as swordfish for a mere £3.50, which isn’t bad for student dining. With loads of seating you won’t be lost for space and you’ll always be satisfied. Great value.

As it’s only open for two and a half hours per day this place is usually fairly full. Considering it’s one of the only places to provide hot food on campus you’ll need to head down promptly, however, there’s plenty of seating and the prices are super cheap so it’s worth it. While the quality might not be Michelin standard it’s all very reasonable considering its target market. For example today I had swordfish, which isn’t too bad for £3.50. You won’t spend over a fiver and you’ll be full: good deal.

Down’s Restaurant on the second floor of Bramber House reminds me a bit of a hall where wedding receptions are held I think it’s the wall-to-wall carpeting and seating for 300. Clearly, I’ve been to some very cafeteria-posh weddings. It’s quite the refectory atmosphere, as opposed to restaurant, but the prices are quite low and the menu(though small) changes daily. There’s always a soup of the day for £1.65 — yesterday it was a yummy butter bean and pesto — in a decent portion size. Other categories are the vegetarian option(chilli yesterday — a bit of a boring one), the international dish(ever popular Italian pasta and sauce) a seafood option(fish and chips) and a wrap or quiche for light appetites. The wrap looked interesting, actually — a Jamaican chicken with Jerk sauce. Meals are all under £4, which is quite good for the size. There’s also a range of tarts, snacks and sides. I’m not going to lie — it’s not a classy joint — but the food will indeed fill you up for cheap.

A decent enough sit down place that does its best to offer a variety of international flavours and favourites, at £ friendly prices and with all the nutrients it can muster. Chopping and changing its menu by margins fairly frequently, its hard to recommend a specific dish, or to tell you what to expect from the place… I’d say the best way to describe it, is as the closest thing to catered accommodation the university provides. It’s all fairly affordable lunch time fair, and the soup I had their was certainly above par. However, the tight opening hours mean you’ll need to be having a sit down lunch here, and I’m more a fan of the good old evening meal.

This is your canteen style university catering, and although pretty darn simple, it’s probably the fanciest thing the university provides. Here you’ll find plenty of choice for hot meals, such as lasagne, soup, apple crumble — slop it up with chips, and whoosh your tray around to the til! Though look up the French Revolution Creperie in Engineering 1, for an independent café serving up delicious homemade/organic grub that the university does its best to keep under wraps — you’ll find reviews of it on Unilocal! The seating and décor of the Downs Restaurant are pretty utilitarian, but the selling factor is the cheap prices — the food quality varies, some of it is quite tasty, but all in all it’s just ok. It’s only open at lunch and I prefer falmer bar, but if you fancy something hot it’s okay for a change!
