Stopped in for lunch, dinner, and an overnight stay during our walk along the Cateran trail. Because we arrived on foot and needed a night at Bridge of Cally due to our itinerary, we didn’t have options. In that sense, it was adequate. We had a dry place to sleep and food and we were happy for both. After having stayed and eaten in a number of other inns in the area, we found this hotel overpriced and lacking in quality. Our room was weirdly organized and cable didn’t work. For lunch, the £6 cheddar sandwich was grated cheese and pickle with literally three crisps(not chips, as advertised). For dinner, we shared a £13 chicken sandwich. It was ok. Wi-fi works only in the dining room. On the plus side, service was friendly. If you’re traveling by car and have other options, explore those. Tigh Na Leigh in Alyth is a the same price and an incredible experience.

After a long night’s travel from the US we hit the ground running in Scotland, heading up through Tayside and landing at the Bridge of Cally Hotel for lunch. Their Conservatory restaurant is light and airy, perched over a wee garden and stream, and offers locally sourced, homemade fare. It was the perfect spot for five hungry travelers who were pure done in. For the first morsels of food to pass anyone’s lips in Caledonia, we ordered the intriguing Haggis Pakoras and some Cullen Skink. Out came several crisp, golden puffs of haggis, bound in an Indian-spiced chickpea batter and served with spicy tomato sauce and raita; and bowls of milky white leek, potato and smoked haddock soup with freshly baked soda bread. Even through the edge of hunger the delicate details of both dishes were readily apparent. For lunch we ordered a full sampling of BoC’s local fare: a Tayside Venison Burger with local blue cheese and caramelized onion; a Minted Lamb Burger with onion marmalade; the Ploughman’s Platter with Scottish cheddar, house-made chutney and crusty ciabatta; and a Brie and Ham panini. BoC’s chips and crisps are all made in-house and presented the perfect pairing to the perfectly sized(lunch portions!) burgers and sammies. The $ to £ exchange ain’t so hot right now, so prices here(as all over the UK) can hit the wallet hard. $ 15 for a Ploughman’s Platter. $ 20 for a burger. What are you gonna do? The setting, food and warm Scottish hospitality make Bridge of Cally an exceptional rest for any traveler.

Just back from a weekend away and stayed here for the Friday night. I was looking for a nice place to stay within an hr or so of the Forth Road Bridge and this place came up as a reasonably priced option in the right location. We did really like it — it is inexpensive — we paid £35 pppn and for that we got a very acceptable room with a good bathroom and a really great breakfast. Loads of choice for breakfast with range of healthy and unhealthy options. Dinner in the conservatory was just what we wanted — they focus mainly on good, solid, well cooked pub food staples — I had fish and chips which was really good — light crispy batter and plenty of fish. They also have a more adventurous specials menu that changes daily — that had things like sea bass, veal and tuna steak. The area around here is beautiful — you are just on edge of the Cairngorms and if you like walking, skiing or golf this would be great place to start out. We drove from here to inverness via scenic route and it really is breath taking country side. Final mention goes to the lovely young chap who checked us in, served us diner and breakfast and then checked us out again. He couldn’t have been nicer — not sure if he family or just works there but is a real asset. Frendly, cosy little Inn in beutiful part of Scotland. Laura
