Sadly the worst mussels I have had. I was trying to work out if they were overcooked, just not fresh but I don’t know what it was. The texture of them was abnormal… The mussel meat tasted dry and they were shrivelled up. Then my husband was ill during the night. Sooo, if we do ever come back here(because I have friends who come here often and love it) I am sure we will not be getting the mussels. I have to say though that the starters were really nice, I had the pâté and my husband had the onion soup.

I’ve been coming to this restaurant ever since I was a child and my mum wanted me to practise my French, and to this day I hear the parents talking to their children in the restaurant doing the same thing. The atmosphere is welcoming, the staff are warm and friendly, and the food is always delicious. It’s reasonably priced(plus, there’s always a deal on somewhere!) and I love having a little chat with the staff every now and then. This place is absolutely perfect(and a five minute walk from my house!); follows the notorious CQSMA rules perfectly, and I always feel satisfied when I’ve left! I would 100% recommend it.

Good, reasonably priced food. The staff in this branch of Café Rouge are friendly and efficient. I strongly recommend the(well-hidden) rear garden for dinner or drinks on a warm evening(there is also a smoking area).

After a nasty encounter with a Café Rouge fish dish(Greenwich branch) a few years ago, I don’t tend to eat main meals in Café Rouge, but as a place to go for coffee, the Blackheath branch is good. Last time I dropped in, I got an excellent coffee, and — after a short wait — a large, well warmed croissant in its own basket complete with a mini jar of jam and some some butter. Top marks for presentation, and I felt so comfortable that I ordered another coffee in due course. Double doors help keep the draughts out, but can be a pain for parents with push-chairs — and though the staff in this French-themed café outlet are generally pretty helpful, they have also perfected the Parisian art of being sullenly efficient: no big beaming smiles or false bonhomie, just brisk and business-like. Interestingly, this Café Rouge seems to have been overlooked or at least has resisted the local Blackheathens’ worthy attempts to stop big chain outlets from colonising our High Streets — a campaign that has restricted Starbucks’ efforts to create a viable coffee shop just round the corner.

Part of the chain but quite nice due to proximity to the Heath and a Cosy feel inside. A safe bet if that’s what you want.

As far as chain restaurants go, Café Rouge is usually pretty reliable. Offering anglicised French fare, one is usually guaranteed a decent meal. I particularly like the look of this branch o Café Rouge from the outside as with the façade adn the lighting it looks a bit more typically French(at least in my mind). However, what brings this one down in my estimation is the fact that it is so cramped inside, especially if you are near the lovely window. Perhaps this also more in keeping with a traditional French restaurant, but it can be a bit claustrophobic.
