Having seen it had been taken over(dropping the ‘sun at’ part if its name) I decided to visit with a friend to see what changes had been made. Was a bit disappointed as everything that made it a little quirky and youthful seems to have gone(including the Banksy-esque wallpaper in the area I usually sit in). The menu has been changed a lot, and is more traditional pub grub then previously when the focus was on different varieties of burgers. I decided to go for the beef burger anyway to see how it was. The meat had a lot of fat/grease dripping off it as I ate which was a little off-putting. However my friend seemed happy with his chicken burger and the skinny fries were moreish. I think I will return to this pub and review again once the new owners have settled in more, as I live close by and it will be interesting to see how different it becomes from previously.

Quirky decoration, reasonably priced drinks, good music, chilled out atmosphere! Visited here on a saturday night with a friend. We just wanted a drink and a chat and this was perfect. There were a couple of large groups but the pub has several small areas you can hide away in. Stayed for a couple of hours drinking cider. I felt very comfortable and will definitely be back!

A great pub, with good food(I had the Sunday roast and it was yummy, he had a pork roast, also yummy). Decent prices for food and drinks, and a pleasantly cozy atmosphere. I really loved the décor & vibe, sort of hipster but without trying too hard to be cool. I thought my roast was a little bland, and I wish there had been more potatoes – it was a sea of peas, with about 3 carrots and potatoes. Overall a good roast though, a nice place to have dinner with friends.

Some friends from University had moved in Kings Heath to be closer to work. I had not seen them in years and we decided to meet up somewhere in High Street for drink. This was last place I thought I’d end up. My first time in this pub and would never have thought about going here if they weren’t already there. To my surprise, It was better than I had imagined. I was expecting some old, dirty pub and it was far from it. We got our food/drinks, picked a spot and hours went by chatting. Was great time and music was just the right volume. It was not jam-packed for a Sunday night. Lovely place and would go again during the day for a proper meal.

The Sun on the Station was the second stop on our CMYE Kings Heath tour on Friday. I had seen the reviews on Unilocal and was very much looking forward to my first visit to this popular local venue. Picked by Kat B.(as she liked the look of the chandeliers but had never been in), we trekked from Cherry Reds to get down to this well rated venue… Firstly, what a great looking pub! Very traditional, but felt warm and inviting from the moment we spotted it. On entry, we were greeted to a not-too-busy-not-too-quiet pub on a Friday night and grabbed a table. Inside it’s stylish, but not hipster with nice décor details(like the wallpaper and light fittings) and a good pub food menu. I bought the first round of drinks and was very pleased to note that a pint of landlord, a pint of specialist ale, a small glass of red, a pint of Grolsch and a small coke was less than £16. The ale was kept well and tasted fresh. Food wise, fish and chips(a gigantic portion) was less than £9 and my veggie burger was £6.50. Result! The outdoor smoking area was small, but perfectly formed with effective heaters ensuring the smokers didn’t freeze whilst sitting out on the decking. They also had several deejays on over the course of the night(but we had to disappear to the next venue before we could check them out). I reckon if I lived in this area, this could fast become a favorite local joint. If you fancy a decently priced dinner or a pint, you won’t go wrong popping in to the Sun.

The Station has been taken over by the folk over at Sun On The Hill the result is nice new décor, friendly bar staff, indie/alt DJs on Fridays and Saturdays, a good choice of tasty pub grub, fab beer garden and plenty of variety in the booze department! Once that back room is opened I’m sure this review will bump up to a 5 star!

The Station is a hushed aside pub at the end of Kings Heath high street and can be quite nauseating to access depending on which side of Birmingham you’re travelling from. However, they do provide a great hired venue within their pub which is quite spacious, large enough for a party of around one hundred members and it also provides a private bar with members of staff that will work especially for your special occasion or thrown event for whichever reason. As this is the only time I’ve even been to Kings Heath’s The Station I couldn’t really say anything about how it’s like on a daily basis, weeknight or even the weekend. But I will say that the drinks are quite pricey and probably not worth checking out if you’re on a low budget but I do recommend checking out otherwise.

The Station is a lovely little pub. I really like how it looks from the outside, in fact that’s what made me pop in there for lunch about a month ago. It was quite quiet when I went in, just a few locals were propped up at the bar or munching in quiet corners. So I myself found a corner and had a look at the menu. I thought that the meals were reasonably priced and upon ordering I got chatting to a lovely barmaid. She recommended several dishes to me and made me feel welcome. I settled on traditional sausage and mash and my goodness, I’ve never seen a sausage that big in my life! Ok I know in Germany the sausages are big, but this was pretty big for a supposedly normal sausage! Anyway, the meal was lovely, if not a little too large for me. I stayed for a couple more drinks and then made my way. I would definitely return to this pub as it has a really friendly vibe about it and the food is quite yummy too.

Traditionalists are having a minor tizz at the new title of ‘The Sun at The Station’. Stuff ‘em. ‘Sometimes Change Is Good’ pronounces the menu holders at this newly re-furbished Kings Heath pub. And this place has being crying out for a change for years. The people behind the Sun On The Hill have brought the interior up to date and made it bright, airy and retro-modern with some subtle and very surreal print wallpaper,(take a closer look to see what I mean), whilst retaining the period features. A good choice of quality drinks include Merlot, Shiraz, and Pinotage for red wine drinkers. Black Sheep Bitter, Sharps’ Doom Bar, Greene King IPA and the ubiquitous Purity Mad Goose feature on hand-pull for ale lovers. There’s a couple of continental strength lagers too. As it’s a sunny day I opt for a Stowford Press cider and head out into the beer garden. This outdoor space has always been the hero of The Station. Now there’s an new undercover area for when the weather ain’t so good, but on days like this sat under the tree in leafy surroundings there’s a very Mediterranean feel going on and it’s a setting that once you’re in, you’ll want to stay. Food? There’s something for everyone on the menu. Choose from traditional favourites, sandwiches, wraps and ciabattas, specials and a tapas-style section including chorizo chipolatas with chipotle sauce for those who like to alliterate when ordering! There’s a breakfast menu too for early risers.

The Station pub at the bottom of the high street in Kings Heath looks great from the outside in and I’m pleased to say continues to look great once you venture inside. It doesn’t hold a place in my affections in the same way that places such as the Hare and Hounds do, but it’s certainly a good quality pub which consistently provides a pleasurable experience. Thursday night is always entertaining as the pub plays host to an open mic evening and as a pub quiz fanatic, I enjoy Deb’s quiz on Tuesday evenings. There is a relaxed atmosphere here but nonetheless entertainment is still a big part of the Station’s ethos. Best of all its a short walk from the wonders of KFC and Hi– Tide so after a few beers you can stuff your face with all the greasy delights the high street has to offer. Another solid offering by the Kings Heath area.
