So I said I d head back and check out the bar area and when I saw that the pickled piglet were launching their cocktail menu(241 cocktails from 5 – 7, m-f) and providing samples of their new spring menu in the bar area with the accompaniment of some acoustic singing, I thought it would be the ideal opportunity to head down. We arrived at 5 and found a cosy corner in the bar. We later found out the singer would practically be on top of us but it was an intimate gig so that was fine by us. We ordered a baker elk fizz with was amaretto, prosecco and sour cherry liqueur. It was very delicious, sweet from the amaretto and cherry and did taste like a bakewell. I did need to stir the ingredients round but I liked the way the cocktail was presented in layers. There appeared to be a good choice and beers and ales too. The food samples started to be circulated just as we were leaving — they were canapés sized and there was a duck taster on a charcoal cracker which was interestingly flavoured with lemon and black pepper. The one I preferred was Guinea fowl in a terrine/pâté — it whetted my appetite to see what else is on the new spring menu. We ll definitely return for some after work cocktails! And I see the PP guys are opening a pub in the JQ — cannot wait for that!

Absolutely love this place, we ate here and had to try 3 courses — it was that good. Lovely ale, I’ve been back since and had the same guest pale ale again!

Visited pickled piglet a few months ago. Really impressed by the restaurants downstairs spacious bar. I spent some time with the waiter, and decided on a refreshing tangy, whisky cocktail which had a great punch to it. The bar mainly consists of whisky and a selection of rums. We were seated upstairs, which was a lovely open, restaurant with a twist of wooden and modern interior. We opted for the ‘Seasonal £10 Menu’ which was great food for the price. The menu consisted of 2 started each and a Main. We chose a selection of small starters, including salmon pâté, salami and pickles and a light prawn cocktail. These starts were small portions but definitely tickled the taste buds. Great light refreshing starters. For the main course I went with a mushroom Risotto and Sea bream. The fish was very fresh with a light batter, risotto was very light, cooked to perfection with a sharpness of lemon which I throughly enjoyed. I only wish the dishes were a little bit larger! Great small dishes, very flavoursome and I would definitely go again. A grande step up from any pub grub in Birmingham.

Following on from Anthony H’s review I has the broccoli, blue cheese soup and a cheeky side order of pâté. All the food which came out before ours looked and smelt fantastic and once ours arrived it didn’t let me down. The soup was a thin white soup with garnished, I thought it odd not to be green, but once I tasted the first mouthful I got a perfectly matched broccoli and blue cheese flavour, balanced so much more than most and so delicious and filing. However, I still managed to squeeze in the pâté and a couple of crackers, which were flavoursome alone but even more so with the creamy smooth pâté. All in all it was an overall fantastic experience and would highly recommend to anyone looking for something a little different and utterly scrummy.

Tucked away down Gas Street, located opposite the Tap and Spile pub, The Pickled Piglet is an unassuming little cottage that seems to be building a nice little reputation for itself for good food. We were trying to decide where to go for a spot of brunch on Sunday a quick google showed this place to have an unusual brunch menu, eschewing the traditional breakfast items in place of more lunch-centric dishes. Ideal as with it being 13:00, we had pretty much overshot the traditional breakfast time-slot. The first thing that strikes you as you enter the building is that it feels like walking into the hall of someone’s house(which is further emphasised by the closed front door on the street!). The main restaurant is situated on first floor and its all painted white walls and exposed floorboards, giving the place an almost ‘art gallery’ vibe. Service was quick and efficient, if very slightly cold, but certainly not rude. We ordered a couple of Belgian amber ales and set about the menu. Within seconds I knew what I was having, the Gnocchi in cream mushroom and blue cheese, with artichokes. The other half decided on the broccoli and stilton soup, with a side of pâté. Both meals were absolutely superb, excellent flavours and cooked to perfection. The gnocchi was particularly delicious, with loads of different types of mushrooms and tender greens. I would upload a photo but I’m afraid I was half way through it before the thought event occurred, and half eaten dishes aren’t really the most photogenic of things… We both left feeling extremely satisfied, having enjoyed a tasty, filling meal with a drink each for less than £25, which is a totally reasonable price given the quality of the food. A few tables of 4 had ordered a couple of sharing boards and selection of small plates along with a bottle of wine. I could see this being an excellent way of spending a Saturday afternoon when a break from the shopping is needed!

We visited the Pickled Piglet on a Saturday night for what was not a resoundingly positive experience. While the ambience of the restaurant was pleasant the food and service didn’t match up. My partner had a sirloin steak which tipped the scales at £18, not an unreasonable amount for a good steak, but this was a distinctly average steak and so we felt a littler cheated.(Especially when comparing this to other steaks we have eaten at other local Birmingham eateries.) While this is just one example I would say this is representative of our experience as a whole… just not quite on the money. A friend visited this restaurant some time ago and had a similar feedback, I had hoped that since then things may have improved but sadly not. Perhaps we would have been better off trying their tapas options, however I’m not willing to chance it — there will be no encore.

I was amongst a party of 10 to visit the pickled piglet on a Saturday evening. My overall impression is that they are punching above their weight. At sixteen pounds plus for a main course, my party expected a certain level of service, which was sadly not delivered. We were not shown to our table, no drinks orders were taken, no wine list, very long waits for anything requested, no service at all really. The food was nice, not great, and not really worth the price tag. My friend’s veggie option was frankly poor. Thankfully, she is not veggie so was offered bits of rather chewy belly pork from her companions. The desserts were nothing special, and that sums up the whole meal. We have all eaten better at gastro pubs and paid less for the privilege.
