This was the location of MANY a hangover breakfast in my uni days. They have a great selection on the menu, from fry ups to pancakes & smoothies. The quality isn’t amazing, but it certainly does the trick! The décor is very cool & casual, and it’s a great place to come for a debrief on the night before. It gets busy so expect a wait on weekend mornings. I would recommend avoiding the loos if you can avoid it — they are exactly as you would expect after being used by hundreds of hungover students. Grim!

I was feeling reminiscent of my university days, so I decided to visit the good ol selly sausage on the Bristol road for a veggie breakfast. The place hasn’t actually changed much from when I was at university 7 years ago It was still very busy though! queues are quite a long wait. They have 2 options for veggie breakfast the full English or the full veggie. In the veggie breakfast option you get 2 eggs served on toasted muffins with cheese, mushrooms, hash browns and beans or tomatoes. In the full English option you get 1 egg, 1 veggie sausage, mushrooms, hash browns, toast, and beans or tomatoes. When I was at university I used to be able to replace the 2 eggs for 1 sausage, unfortunately they no longer allow you to do that, which was quite disappointing. The toasted muffins were not toasted and the whole breakfast was luke warm, which also meant that the cheese didn’t melt, which again was disappointing. The hot chocolate is really nice, I would definitely recommend that, but again it was just warm not hot. The atmosphere was really nice though, probably as wer’e no where near exam time yet lol Overall it was quite filling and you get quite a bit for your money, breakfast and a hot choc for a fiver, but I think id’ prefer to pay more for a proper hot breakfast somewhere a little cleaner.

This café has been a fixture of the student area of Selly Oak for many years and has improved over time. It’s now fitted out much more like a bar than a café, with large windows at the front offering light into the spacious dining area. There is also a small outside area to the rear. The food is pretty good and reasonably priced and the full english breakfast is particularly good. With thousands of students from the nearby Birmingham University living in the area, and with this being a popular hangout, I wouldn’t even bother trying to go here on a weekend morning during term time. You may have to wait a LONG time to get a seat. During the week, however, it’s a nice spot for a bite to eat.

For all the fine dining and sophisticated company you might hope to enjoy in the town centre, The Selly Sausage aims for the opposite and appeals directly to its target demographic of students situation in Selly Oak. Just outside of the campus, it’s difficult to miss the bright green colour scheme that stands out like neon on the Bristol Road and you could spend a good while scanning the fliers and posters that adorn its walls and windows. As for the grub, I have many fond memories: It’s pure greasy comfort food and it is ace. The legendary Big Breakfast is served all day and is nothing less than an institution: two rashers of bacon, two sausages, two eggs, two pieces of toast, Selly Sausage hash brown, tomatoes, mushroom and black pudding all squeeze onto a plate and whether it’s to cure a hangover, or for a cheap celebration, it’s all good. I’m particularly fond of the burgers and can never resist upgrading for all the trimmings: Even the filter coffee is nice — go for a vanilla latte to offset the delicious stodge that is the food. Despite the emphasis on meat, the veggie breakfast is surprisingly nice and doesn’t feel like it’s been tacked on as an afterthought. The toasted muffin, eggs, mushrooms and beans can sometimes go down a little easier! Similarly, the pancakes are as sweet as the mains are meat heavy: By this point you probably won’t have any room left, but they’re definitely worth a try if you can go the distance. While the cuisine is by no means imaginative, the inexpensive menu, its location and its ability to really appeal to its student demographic without the use of lame novelties makes the Sausage as good a place to kick back as any.

Out of all the cafes aimed at South Birmingham’s student population, Selly Sausage is probably the most successful and easily the most visible, spreading across two store fronts in the centre of Selly Oak. There’s open plan seating, a wall dedicated to posters advertising local gigs and club nights and a mural of an eagle on the back wall. As you can imagine, it does a good trade in hangover zapping sandwiches that are heavy on the fried meats and the menu offers an impressive selection of breakfasts. Extra credit should be given for the particularly appealing vegetarian options which seem well thought out rather than a rushed after thought. Prices are well within the reach of all but the most empty wallets. My only gripe with the Selly Sausage is that the atmosphere(and particularly the Radio 1 centric playlist) is a bit too noisy for me, especially if I’m trying to nurse a hangover. However, if you like eating breakfast surrounded with loud students and Rhianna on full blast then this is the place for you…

Perfectly nice place to get a quick bite to eat. I am suprised the previous reviewer described it as a restaurant, as it really isn’t. It is called Selly Sausage Café, and this is a pretty good indication of what you will get decent food at a decent price in an informal setting. Today I had a nice panini and a cup of filter coffee for ~£4, you could go for a burger and pay more, or for a sausage sandwich and pay less. The menu is broad, and you could get a pint a beer to go with your pancakes if you like. Many of my friends go for the ‘full english’ breakfasts in a variery of sizes and are never dissapointed. Very busy during term-time, and for good reason.

As a former student at the University I remember the Selly Sausage as a great place for a good hangover fry up. NOTSONOW I’m afraid. I dragged a mate down to Selly from the city centre on the promise of a great breakfast and what we got was the opposite. We waited forty minutes for our order to arrive while drinking lukewarm tea from the most chipped and unhygienic looking mugs I have ever seen, only to be presented with a cold fry up made up from ingredients entirely different from those advertised on the menu. Undercooked meats and tinned tomatoes condemned the meal to my worst fry ever. The staff were cold and disinterested. After a wait like that they didn’t even bring over any cutlery… you have to collect that yourself! Avoid the Selly Sausage, this place has gone down the pan.

The single best place in Selly Oak to cure your hangover, The Selly Sausage has evolved over the years from a simple greasy spoon diner into a somewhat more diverse dining experience. Everything from all-day breakfasts to pancakes(sweet and savoury), and salads to jacket potatoes are on offer here, with plenty more besides. Prices are student-friendly, and the staff are mostly students themselves, giving the whole place a chilled, friendly atmosphere. It can get quite busy in here, especially on the mornings after a heavy night of partying(read: practically every night in Selly Oak). If you can get a table, though, this is one of the best sit-down lunch venues in the area.

A very handy café in Selly Oak, often found brimming with students looking for a hangover cure. The prices are quite reasonable for the quality of food you get and there are plenty of spaces so you are pretty much always guaranteed a seat. The owner is certainly aware of his market and there are occasional student nights and discounts available. Staff are always very helpful and as they are usually ex or current students they are very friendly. Service is very quick. They can allow you to book tables for special events which makes it an ideal stop for a Selly Oak pub crawl.

Opened by a student from Birmingham uni about 18 years ago, this place serves the ultimate hangover cure– the full engklish breakfast. It has a capacity of about 70 – 80 people, and whilst always fairly full, the service is good, and the food is served quickly, just what you want after a heavy night before. The staff are all very friendly, students or ex-students most usually, which explains the excellent student discounts. Recently they have started hosting events in the evenings, and although I haven’t yet been in the evening, there is live entertainment every Monday night I am told. To sum it all up, speaking from experience, located at the heart of ‘Birmingham uni– student ville’ that is Selly Oak, it is brilliant for that ultimate hangover cure!
