I have a pathological dislike of hairdressers usually. Don’t aske me why, I must have had a bad experience somewhere in my past that I’ve obliterated. It is irrational and ridiculous and it has also meant that I’ve sampled a good few hairdressers over the years and never been able to settle on one. Until now. I feel relaxed whenever I go in, which is a great start. There’s always a smiling face waiting to help behind the desk. The cuts are good value, and if you go on a Tuesday they are even better value as they have a special deal on. I have no time for fussy styles or complicated fashion cuts but that doesn’t mean I don’t want to look good because I’m vain enough to care about my appearance. I get a great cut from Helen. It always looks good and I don’t feel pressure to ask for the latest style, colour etc if I don’t want to. On the other hand I’m sure they can do all of this with ease should I change my mind. They also offer a great value service for kids. A haircut for a fiver and a choice of lolly at the end-what more could you ask for?

I’m embarrassed to admit that it took me a while to get the joke in the name of this place. Particularly as I studied Roman history for a considerable chunk of my time at university. However, my own stupidity aside, I was fairly happy with my experience at Julia’s Scissors. To be honest, I’m very rarely over the moon with any haircuts, and this was a pretty standard ‘OK but not going to change my life’ experience — which is generally how it goes with me and haircuts. Perhaps I should stop expecting haircuts to change my life… No complaints about the staff, who were all very friendly and professional. I did feel a little bit like I was in and out of there in 5 mins, which is a little disconcerting when they’re being entrusted with your barnet, but nothing untoward to report. A decent hair cut from a decent place.

As we walk into the salon Jeni comments, ‘Its all decked out like somewhere in Greece’. She’s not a natural blonde, but sometimes she acts like the cliché of what fairer-haired women are often believed to be like in terms of grey matter The décor of this hair salon has an ancient Roman theme,(Julias Scissors, Julius Caesar, get it?), and I’m accompanying Jeni here while she has her highlights er, ‘done’. I’ve had my hair coloured,(that’s the gentleman’s word for it), before and I’ve often found it a bit annoying when the colourist is bobbing between heads of hair, rushing from one side of the salon to the other, applying dye to someone’s hair, then drying someone else’s, then foiling another’s, all at the same time At Julias Scissors, Jeni has the colourist all to herself. She’s relaxed throughout and the treatment is at around half the price of elsewhere.

This is a wonderful hair salon. It is situated in a quirky side street in Kings Heath. The owner, Julia, is an experienced hairdresser who really takes the time to assess your hair and to help you make decisions regarding new styles, colour etc. She is a busy lady but always takes time and never, ever compromises. She has a lovely staff team working with her. The latest magazines are available to read and you are looked after from start to finish. I cannot recommend this salon highly enough.
