Have you got a Hat Man hat? Hat man are one of the oldest independent urban retailers in the country and strong supporters of the local music and fashion scene. Mixed in with the big variety of big name and independent brands, the corner stone of hatman is their own brand of hats, donned by local music artists and supporters of Birmingham in general. Price range shifts a lot due to the range of items and stock, expect to find clothes, accessories, massive array of headwear, cds and dvds from bid labels and smaller local ones. Theres always a sale of some sort going on in store or on the website so its worth a regular check in to see whats going on

Sounding like a superhero with a tooled-up utility boater, Hat Man is in fact a brilliant shop on Stephenson Street that has been supplying headgear to Brummie bonces for several years now. I’d been in numerous times to make a purchase, or sometimes just to check out the range of street-wear caps, visors and beanies. However, I’d just assumed that with all the extensive redevelopment to nearby New Street Station well under way that the owners had had to literally hang up their hats and move on to pastures new. I was shocked and delighted then to walk down Stephenson Street earlier this week and notice that the Hat Man was still very much open for business! YES!!! I couldn’t resist popping in again for a look and reacquainting myself with the breathtaking range of stock that I thought had gone forever. Although the mother of the bride still might find it hard to top off her floral outfit here(it’s not that kind of hat shop), the more fashion conscious Birmingham heads are never going to run out of things to wear as long as Hat Man has anything to do with it.

Hat Man has been in Birmingham for as long as I can remember. You would be forgiven for thinking this is just an urban hat shop. Similar in style to the kind of touristy shops you find around London’s West End, you might feel a little hesitant to enter the store, which is full to the brim with products and blasting out music, but you really shouldn’t worry; the staff are friendly and happy to help. As well as selling hats for men and women, Hat Man’s Corporation Street branch sell clothing, smoking paraphenalia, jewellery, watches and even gold teeth for a tenner each! This branch also has the added benefit of a ticket office downstairs where you can browse the flyers(displayed next to the counter) if you’re not sure which event you are interested in. They also have a small selection of DVDs and CDs for sale. As well as cheaper clothing that you might find on a market stall like £11.99 hoodies(they are nice though!) and patterned leggings for £3, Hat Man also sell some decent gear by brands such as Adidas, Nike, Armani, Hugo Boss, Kangol and Paul & Shark. They have a huge range of hats, from baseball caps to trilbies and also sell their own brand caps, beanies and rucksacks. Most women’s wear in here is under £30 with the exception of a few jackets by Adidas and suchlike. Men’s t-shirts can be picked up from between 50p-£40 and the hats are around the same price bracket with the trilbies being at the higher end. Hat Man also stock local clothing brands so if you are interested in getting your brand on the high street, on a sale or return basis, then please pop in and chat with them.
