ColdRice has been a part of Birmingham’s live event scene for over a decade, first putting on shows at Bar Academy on Dale End and then moving to a private location for members only and finally back out into the daylight with irregular shows at some of the regular venues. Over the years ColdRice has bought some acts to Birmingham that I have no doubt would never have found their way here otherwise, bands like The Dirtbombs, Soledad Brothers, Black Lips, Bob Log III, the list of garage/blues/rock n’ roll bands is pretty extensive. On occasion you would even find people like Kim Deal and Meg White and bands like Blondie or The Kills just there to socialise and see other bands even though they weren’t on the bill. Despite being quite a select kind of music style the events were never exclusive and as well as clued up hipsters, everyone is made to feel welcome so you have quite a nice eclectic mix of people at the shows. As well as events ColdRice is also a record label and all the music is available for donation on the website. The events are infrequent now but if you are into punk bues, garage rock, rock n’ roll or any of that kind of stuff you should definitely keep an eye out of ColdRice.

They’ve been around since 2001 and are named after a reference to the band Make Up. Coldrice is an irregular clubnight that is generally held in a secret location; you have to join their mailing list to find out the address. They do however sometimes put on events in venues such as Bodega, Hare & Hounds and The Sunflower Lounge. Specialising in Blues, Rock n Roll and Garage rock expect to hear a mix of live bands and djs. Their regular in house bands have included Black Mekon, Copter, Swampmeat and The Castillians. Other acts to have graced their stage include Heavy Trash, Mr David Viner, Ladyfingers, Soledad Brother and Bob Log III. In the interest of clarity I should point at that I sometimes help out on the door at their events. However this is a night that I regularly attend regardless of whether or not I am helping out as they put on bands that wouldn’t normally get to play in Birmingham. Their events are always amazing. If you’re into acts such as Jon Spencer Blues Explosion, The Black Lips, The Oh Sees and The Strange Boys you’ll probably be aware of the existence of this clubnight, if not where have you been! Check out their website for their latest events and check out their webstore while you’re there to hear some of the Colrice family bands.
