We all have our favourite pub; our reliable local. Perhaps it’s an old, traditional pub like The City Tavern that’s stood the test of time. Or perhaps it’s a modern and fresh establishment. Either way, pubs bring about intense emotions. Testament to this is the fact that, after our set at the City Tavern, a man brashly asked for the mic. ‘Appreciate the old pubs,’ he said, stressing the importance of the City Tavern’s presence in Birmingham. Or, at least, something along these lines. — He was a rambling man but the essence of his words were strong and passionate and the pub roared and applauded. So, the City Tavern is a little bit special. You don’t find many pubs like this anymore. It reminded of us our local back in Stirling, The Settle Inn. There was an extremely warm welcome and just the right amount of quirks dotted about; from the most extensive Sambuca range I’d ever seen to the humorous chalkboard detailing ten reasons to drink at the City Tavern. Of course, the City Tavern isn’t perfect. Several of the ladies room toilet door’s had no lock so that’s a factor in my overall rating. Although, we had a really lovely time here. The staff were grateful to have us play, welcomed us back at anytime and gave us a post-gig drink on the house. We were playing a free show as part of the Birmingham Jazz & Blues Fest, so this was a really nice gesture. That ballsy man and his passionate words ring true. — Appreciate the older pubs!
