My family and I went to Chung Ying to celebrate my mother-in-laws birthday. We were offered a round table with a lazy susan. The waiters ignored us at first, but then after that the service was great. I ordered the vegetarian dim sum for starter and then the bean curd noodles for main. the dim sum was amazingly tasty, however the bean curd noodles was just salty. Toilets were cold.

I’ve been here a few times in the last 6 months. I bumped into an old friend I went to uni with and because she’s Chinese she suggested we go here for dimsum. I can’t believe how excellent it was. Delicious although a little pricey for a week day meal. The next time I went I took my parents. Mum not so adventurous but still enjoyed it. Dad however loves different culinary experiences just like me. It was pretty busy and the food came out quite quickly. Simply put the food is delicious!

So there are 3 Chung Ying venues in Birmingham now. Chung Ying(which I haven’t visited yet) Garden and Central. We took a friend of ours to Chung Ying Garden not so long ago as he is a big fan of Chinese food and we thought this would be a good place to satisfy that. Its set slightly off from the main street in the Chinese Quarter in Birmingham. The décor and setting is lovely inside and just the sort of cleanliness you would expect really. Food wise it has a great selection of food, more so really than many other chinese restaurants. They have the standard sort of drinks on offer for you but that is by no means a bad thing, thats not really why you go for chinese after all. The staff are very accommodating and pleasant and make you feel very welcome. Honestly I am finding it very difficult to pick any sort of flaws at all with Garden. I will definitely be heading to the flagship restaurant soon.

It’s been a long time since I’ve dipped my toes into one of the older Chung Ying restaurants, after spending a fair amount of time in CYC! However, I was in China Town looking for food and thought this would be a good time to visit an old friend! Ching Ying Garden is in an odd place. It’s just down a side alley, which means it looks a bit suspect. Don’t be fooled! CYG is, to my mind, a very traditional restaurant, very different from the modern stylings of Chung Ying Central. No explodes brick and metal here, just nice chairs and table cloths. And I think that’s great: D But enough about the décor, on to the food! The menu is packed with a great selection of Dim Sum. My partner in dine and I both went for deep fried seafood options. Both were cooked excellently. The content of the menu is quite expansive. The focus, however, is very much on the meat of the dish(there is a much wider range than just chicken, pork, duck and prawn; venison, for example). The range of sauce options is a little limited. However, there is also a good range of noodle and rice dishes as well as a more traditional menu. I looked at this but wasn’t brave enough this time!!! Although my comment above about the menu makes it sound a little restrictive, what you get is absolute quality. CYG aren’t throwing every chinese takeaway cliché at you. It’s just classic flavours cooked well. This isn’t the cheapest chinese you’ll have, but it will be one of the best. The service was impeccable; staff were attentive but not intrusive. We were in a bit of a rush, but the meal proceeded smoothly, so there was no manic moments. And they let us take the left overs. This was a great reminder of why Chung Ying has the name it does. I’ll certainly be looking to come back one pay day!

Very good food. The yuk sung is pretty special. The portions here are huge(a set meal for two is certainly suitable for feeding four). This means good value for money, but at the same time the feeling of a lot of waste if you don’t really want to be carrying leftovers home. The service is a little lacklustre, but not awful. The décor is dated. If you’re here on the weekend you may overhear nearby clubs/private parties whilst you’re dining, which negatively affects the ambiance of the place further. I wouldn’t come here for the ambiance, but I would come back for the quality of the food. A fair substitute for Chung ying central if they have a noisy event on.

Despite living in Birmingham for over 10 years, up until Monday I had only managed to get to one of the Chung Ying venues in the City. The CY legacy comprises of three different restaurants, Central, Chung Ying and Garden. On Monday night I had the unique opportunity to visit all three venues and grab a bite to each in every one. I have to say, Chung Ying Central is still my favourite; however, Garden is definitely worth a visit. Garden is located just off the main drag of the Gay/Chinese quarter and is ideally located if you are visiting the Hippodrome. It has a more traditional feel to it and a sense of history and grandeur as you walk in. With the red and gold motifs, fish tanks and warm welcomes from the staff; you know you’re going to be looked after as you enter. We were situated upstairs for the event I attended, but I would have loved to explore more of the downstairs area. Maybe next time I can update you on that too! The upstairs has several seating areas and dining tables. It could comfortably fit around 150 diners and has a bar, a stage and it’s own toilet facilities. As part of the menu we tried seafood noodles, fish dishes, an egg dish(like crème brûlée but salty and not sweet), roast duck, roast pork and rice. It was served with a traditional tea which I believe was Jasmine. The staff kept bringing over plates and plates of lovely food to try throughout our experience and the wine served here was also excellent. The stand out for me was the duck, but I enjoyed everything I tried and it was all presented beautifully with attentive and friendly service before, during and after the meal. Again, I’ll stress that as this was a ticketed event; I can’t comment on the price of individual dishes. The quality of the food, service and surroundings spoke volumes though and has certainly made me want to try the other two venues again for a proper sit down meal experience.

Quick glance: + friendly waiters + value for money + big portion + authentic taste — salty food Full review: As a Londoner, I really enjoyed my meal at Chung Ying Garden while visiting my friend in Birmingham. The waiters are friendly, the food tasted good(although a bit on the salty side), and the dishes are big — great value for money. The menu was extensive and included items I rarely see in other Chinese restaurants, including ostrich, kangaroo and eel. For £37 we had a brisket stew, half a duck, beef ho fun and two vodka and tonic — and plenty of leftovers for lunch next day!

Just average. Went recently for the first time since I was a kid and felt like the whole place was a little tired. Big selection on the menu so best to go with a big group as I wanted to try more dishes. Food was good and portions large but the prices were higher than I’d expected. In reference to the previous reviews on an early Friday evening there was an almost 50:50 split of east Asian and caucasian diners.

the décor is very dated chinese feel. and very dim lighting. was sat in the corner and very easily neglected for service. the food was good though, but it’s all too touristy for my taste. and a bit overpriced. there are plenty of better chinese restaurants a stone’s throw away. definitely worth one visit. but otherwise, the menu’s pretty standard. and in regards to the previous poster. i didn’t see 1 chinese table there. mostly caucasians frequenting the restaurant.

This restaurant was set up in the wake of success of its sister restaurant — the Chung Ying — both in the central location of Birmingham’s China Town. It boasts over 400 dishes over its three menus: Banquet, Deluxe Banquet and Vegetarian. They even have ‘English options’ for the fussy eaters out there. Each menu has a variety of ‘set-menus’ to choose from: it’s not one of those places where you can pick and choose dishes for yourself. However that doesn’t necessarily make you feel restricted, as there is a lot of variety and choice within each one. Prices start at £16 per head, but by gum do you get your money’s worth. If you’re anywhere near as much of a scavenger as I am, you’ll walk away with a full stomach and arms weighted down with doggy bags with which to feed yourself for the next three days. Some options have a minimum requirement of 6 people, some 4 people, and others appear to have no restrictions, so it could be worth checking that out before you go if you’re going in a small group. However it does make the perfectly ideal sharing platter for large groups of people. Words of wisdom that my mother passed onto me, were that it was always a very good sign to see Indian people eating at an Indian restaurant. After all, they will know their own cuisine far better than anyone else, surely? By extrapolating this idea to include other cuisines, I took it as a very promising sign to see lots of Chinese diners enjoying their meals at Chun Ying Gardens, making me very excited about my forthcoming feast. For a feast it truly was. Trust me. The name ‘Banquet Menu’ is very apt. It also tasted so good, that I was actually disappointed when my stomach became full, because I definitely wanted to carry on eating. The waiting staff were also very attentive, it was always easy to get their attention when required. They were also very accommodating with my grandmother’s birthday cake, which they obligingly put candles on and brought out for us — mercifully without the accompanying ‘Happy Birthday’ soundtrack you get at a lot of other Chinese restaurants. If I’m ever to dine out in Birmingham in a big group again, this is the place I would go to.

Chung Ying Garden is my favourite Chinese restaurant anywhere. I like the fact that lots of the other clients are Chinese. It speaks to the quality of the food. The cuisine is Cantonese. The most fun time to go is at lunchtime, to sample the gorgeous dim sum. The dishes, because they are traditional throw up great little quirks that you weren’t expecting compared to the generic Chinese we get in as a take-away. I would recommend saving to go here, because then you can choose anything on the menu that takes your fancy. The place is reasonably priced, but it all mounts up, and you’ve got to have some left over for Saki, which I love.

The Chung Ying Garden my favourite Chinese place to eat in Birmingham. It’s always busy with Chinese families at weekends and being Chinese go with my parents or friends. It’s not Chinese food for English people! You can get good dim sum though sadly not in the heated trolleys, like in London. The service is good and quick. If you like canto pop(popular Cantonese pop songs) they use to do karaōke upstairs but I’m not sure if they do it still. I recommend the house special ho fun dish which is rice sticks(a type of noodle) and lots of different meats yummy! Dishes are reasonably priced.

It is probably the best and the most popular Chinese restaurant in Birmingham. I go there at least once a month. Family-run business for many years, good food, friendly staff, highly recommended. p. s. i believe ‘Chung Ying Cantonese Restaurant’ nearby is run by the same people(also another great Chinese restaurant).

This is my favorite Chinese restaurant, which is located in the heart of China town. This restaurant offers all kinds of Chinese dishes. You can taste all the food in different region of China. The food has always been delicious and the service has been pretty good. Parking facilities are available.
