Oh my god, I can guarantee that this is the best ice cream you will ever taste. Desanos has been on the Newtownards Road for generations and produces (onsite) ice cream which is unbelievably good — like frozen cream with sugar thrown in. The shop is strictly no frills, only sells vanilla and is always queued out the door which is an indication of just how good it is.
Desanos only opens sporadically and when it does, it will bunged (as they say in Belfast) within minutes. Get there too late on a sunny day and you’ll be greeted by a hastily written ‘sold out’ sign and the worst feeling of deprivation ever.
Ice creams are traditional cones, tubs, or ‘sliders’ (Belfast people will know what that means) with flakes, sprinkles or nuts and prices are really reasonable. Don’t expect a Ben and Jerrys type experience but I can honestly say that Desanos ice cream is worth a journey to get your chops round a 99. Heaven.
