The Windmill is like a little community of lovers of fried goods, busy from early until late. At lunchtime it is hiving, with an overspill sitting underneath the awnings, but I’ve never ventured in at that time. My time for the Windmill is late, when the streets are dark and you’ve went out for a drink after work that kept getting bigger and all of a sudden you realise you’ve had no dinner and it is a school night. This is when The Windmill comes into it’s own, providing all the starchy goodness a reveller or late night worker would need. OK, so a cheesy chip may not be haute cuisine, but once you’ve had one here after the pub, you’ll be craving one every time you just walk by.

Horrible chips which were definitely not homemade. Normally when I order chips in this sort of establishment, I expect thick cut, fresh, meaty ones. Theirs are regular american sized fries, guess it was the cheapest option to buy from frozen. Also the ones advertised in garlic chips came drenched in mayonnaise, a second portion, which to be fair was given without any fuss, had a litttle fruit fly sticking to them. Guess things like this happen, it just didn’t help the overall impression.

greasy spoon? count me in. the windmill has all the characteristics of your classic diner… friendly service, unpretentious, but delicious food, and an interior that doesn’t look like it’s seen renovations since the 70’s. the fare is cheap, and they’ve always been more than willing to throw anything together i’ve ever drunkenly dreamed up. crayon bacon bap? you got. tuna melt on soda bread with a bowl of bacon on the side? no friggin’ problem! no frills and no disappointments.

A confession… I’ve only ever been to this chippy/café after a Saturday night out down at McHugh’s so my recollections are generally a bit fuzzy. Up on the side of the in-shops on Church Lane the Windmill has been around for years and has everything a good caff should have. I normally get the chips of an evening out as my body’s craving starch and salt and these really hit the spot. They’re cheap as well and the staff are normally very good natured with the more slightly worse for wear as they dither over their choices. I’m also reliably informed this is a great place to get inside info or an invite to any house parties happening. Not that I’d know anything about that type of thing of course. Pros: Big menu, tasty. Cons: In the evening it’s basically a chippy with some nice seating.

The Windmill is a lovely little café seconds away from the Victoria Centre. It worries me that the more luring places like the Victoria centre become, the less these small independent places can hang on. Thankfully The Windmill should have little problem. It does such a varied range of food and at really good prices; it should be pulling people in off the streets for a long time. The first time I went here I was told about their kebab and hesitantly I went for it, unsure how a kebab would look in the cold hard light of day. I was pleasantly surprised as it was great! Not anything like the stuff you get at 1am on your way home, it had a great mix of flavours and a really authentic taste that has since had me returning for more.

An extremely busy wee café perfect as a lunchtime haunt for shoppers and workers alike. They provide outdoor seating, ideal for a spot of people watching as it is situated close to the new Victoria Square but also hidden away from the hustle and bustle so you do get peace to eat and enjoy your meal. I went with my 7month old son and the staff were fantastic, getting a highchair over for him right away. The menu was great. Everything you would want from a chippy from burgers, chicken, pizza’s, kebabs(yum), fish and loadsa chips for thoses after my own heart! You can even get sarni’s with a cuppa! The specials are all charged at £4.95 and when I went these included chicken and chips, hicken burgers and beef burgers with chips… bargain! The food was good. My burger came with a side salad aswell, perhaps to make me feel less guilty for the chips?! lol. The Windmill has a relaxing busy hum of an atmosphere, with the noise of the coffee machine and radio its a great place to eat. I found it very clean and well organised and the staff were fab. I was also pleased to see an all-day fry available for £3.95…perhaps next time! There was also a take away service available for thoses on the go. So The Windmill really does cater for all! A fantastic wee greasy spoon with all the trimmings you’d expect.

The Windmill is a great little café, hidden down in Church Lane. Like many of the little gems on this street, it never disappoints. It serves a ridiculously varied amount of food. It does kebabs, which is new to me for a local side street café. Usually their left to the late night chip shops for the drunkards(me) staggering home. A Sober kebab is always a unique experience, but the amazing thing was that it didn’t taste like death. The food here isn’t spectacular, its just nice. No more, no less. The staff are very friendly and will happily take any alternations to your menu choice without a grumble. The prices are perfectly fine as well making The Windmill a nice little place to go when looking for a quick bite in town away from the hustle and bustle of the busier streets.

I’ve been going to the Windmill for years and service has never failed to disappoint. It’s your typical greasy spoon café, serving everything from sandwiches and fries to kebabs and pizza’s. The food is absolutely gorgeous, not gourmet standards but then again it’s not supposed to be, and staff are always eager to please. But what I really love about The Windmill is how private it is, situated as it is down a smal side street off the bustling Ann St and Victoria Square shopping district. It’s a nice place to retreat from the buzz of the City Centre, especially on a Winter’s day when it is well heated and lit.
