Sinclair Seamen’s Presbyterian Church

Sir Charles Lanyon designed this church is 1856 – 57. It is located on Corporation Street in the commercial dockland area of Belfast’s Sailortown. It was commissioned by Thomas Sinclair in memory of his father John Sinclair, who was a Belfast merchant. As it was built as a haven for sea men, with a nautical theme in mind, the building features ships and lifeboats. It doesn’t stop here either, there’s a range of shipping and naval memorabilia such as naval flags, two miniature lighthouses (with lights that actually work!) there are navigational lights on the pulpit as well as a lectern in the shape of a ship’s prow. There’s also some stunning stained glass windows. The church also houses a World War I brass wheel and capstan, navigation lights from a Guinness barge, and the bell from the pre-​World War I battleship HMS Hood.‘s. A fascinating and fun feature of maritime Belfast.
