This is a surprisingly cosy traditional pub with a narrow seating area running alongside the bar and a marble terrazzo floor reminiscent of the old days of spit and sawdust. Pictures, flags and ornaments relating to Ulster unionism, in keeping with the large mural just outside that depicts the signing of the Ulster Covenant, decorate the interior. Built in 1865, it is regarded as the oldest pub on the Shankill Road and has the atmosphere that comes from being a place of long standing to match. Apparently the Rex Bar is haunted, however, it’s a friendly enough place for a restorative drink and a glimpse at some Saturday afternoon sport on the large flatscreen TV above the bar.
