The first time I had paella was in Barcelona about 15 years ago. It was a rich cadmium yellow, permeated with fresh langostines, mussels, chunks of chicken thigh and lightly spiced smoked chorizo. Stunning. This paella stall is Spanish run so you would hope for a pretty high level of cuisine on offer. They cook the ricey delight in the usual large pan and it’s always ready to go if you’re stopping by. I had a small portion of the seafood paella for £3. It was a pretty meagre portion of over cooked, slightly sweet under seasoned rice with a spattering of squid rings and I think I saw a prawn or two. A bit dry and sticky, not much depth to the stock and a distinct lack of any saffron coming through. To be honest I was hungry and it filled a hole but it was starchy and not particularly well flavoured, a bit disappointing overall.
