«Want you to make me feel like I’m the only girl in the world.» How fitting that that was the tune that greeted us as we ascended the stairs up here. Dry ice, tumbleweed and me the only girl in the world well actually a few left when I came. Apparently nothing happens in Belfast on a Sunday according to the very sweet bouncer who felt really bad that I was the only girl in his world. «Seriously it’s grand, need an early night anyho.» «No it’s not, why didn’t you go out last night?» «Because I don’t have a TV and the hotel does and it was treat to watch Take That’s documentary, I had no idea how pained Mark was.» «You stayed in and watched TV?» I’m sure he lost all sympathy for me at that point.

How did I end up here? Oh, right… too much gin made it seem like a good idea… Just so we’re clear — Mynt was terrible. I was sticking to the floor for goodness sake! And I wasn’t drunk enough to overlook that. Plus, I wasn’t there until after hours, so I couldn’t order a proper drink. Fair enough, but at this point, most bars only offer spirits. Mynt only offered vodka and red bull. What? Despite ostensibly being a gay bar, there was nothing to suggest that to me. It appeared to be an M Club type crowd and it was pretty obvious there were a lot of drugs floating about — bad times. The music was pretty hardcore house music, which isn’t really my thing either. Safe to say I won’t be back!

I faintly remember going to Mynt back when I was a suckling student — times were tough and a night out often ended messily with a mixture of daft antics and copious damage to a previously reasonably fresh tool of protein synthesis. I was here a few months back while working. The annual Sport Relief fun run malarkey was on in the city and I was covering it. Mynt was used as basecamp for the celebrity guests and press — it was quite accommodating I must say. Downstairs during the day it’s a nice bright bar, plenty of the usual booze on offer and a handful of friendly staff. I ended up spending my time speaking to a handful of MLAs and the north’s most devise radio host, Stephen Nolan. It’s not one of my haunts and to be honest at weekends it seems to be a heady mix of the hopelessly wasted and is bounced more rigorously than secret service detail at a presidential fund-raiser.

I had no idea this was a gay bar until I saw the below reviews! Anyway, I’m not really a big fan of this place. It’s a bit nightclubby for me. Anytime I’ve paid in– the steep 12 or so pounds– I’ve spent my night out back in the smoking area negating the point of paying in! The décor is swish inside, pretty sleek and modern. Sometimes they have eclectic DJ’s on downstairs who play more ambient stuff than upstairs. When I was there, the downstairs bar was decorated like a festival with neon butterflies and the likes. Upstairs is only for hardcore nightclubbers or ravers. I couldn’t handle it. I went upstairs to find my mate but couldn’t see in front of me as the smoke from the smoke machine was sooo thick and dense. It was like being lost in some kind of nightmarish rave fog! The drinks are expensive enough too. Don’t really think I’d bother going again.

I’ve got to confess some serious love for Mynt. It’s fast becoming my favourite local, with really tasty food by day and good music by night(well, sort of good). It’s an absolute hole and it’s empty at the best of times, having lost alot of the ‘in crowd’ to Kremlin and Rain on a Monday night, but it’s kind of like the eccentric nut of a neighbour that you like in spite of yourself; sure, the trendy kids live just up the street, but he’s better craic anyways. So you just go in for a drink and hope no one notices.

Mynt is another one of Belfast’s buzzing Gay clubs and it is brilliant! They have live DJ’s playing a host of music form the dance, house and electro scene and its always a great night out! They open for food during the day and the menu is pretty good and reasonably priced. The opening hours at night are pretty long so the night doesn’t have to end early and you can always skip across to Yello too. This bar is not exclusively Gay which means its a great night out for everyone! You can really let your hair down and dance the night away! Drinks are reasonably priced and the place is always thriving A great place to go when out with a group as you can spend your whole night here rather than bar hopping and risking losing people along the way.(as so often happens!) Really love this place and its always a great laugh filled with people just out for a good night!

Mynt(previously Kube) is one of Belfast’s few gay bars. I’m not that way inclined, but boy can I tell you, I’ve had some great times at this bar. It always seems to be better craic here than it is in the straight bars. At least if you’re out for a night of girly fun and dancing you don’t get harassed by guys as much! Usually during the weekend they have great DJs, offering some top notch, quality music. Their after hours night club is called Yello and is popular for clubbing after the bars shut. As it’s a gay bar you’d expect them to be very accepting which they are. They also have a restaurant which does surprisingly good food. Mynt is located just out of the main town and therefore less busy in the evening. Don’t expect this at night though where it will be buzzing with people both straight and gay coming together to party the night away. I went to my after formal here, which was out of this world! It’s often used for this occasion and I couldn’t recommend it any more.

The second best gay club in Belfast! Avoid Yello(the after hours club) unless you like hard techno music and people off their heads on drugs.
