This Mace has actually had a facelift from what it looks like in the profile picture. It is now swanky with a modern wooden sign, it doesn’t even look like a convenience store anymore, so much so that my friend walked right past it when he was looking for snacks. They sell pretty much everything including baked goods, cigarettes, national lottery tickets and hot food. They don’t sell alcohol or have an ATM but never fear both of these amenities are a short walk down the Ormeau Road. One thing to take note of is that it’s always busy in this store, especially at peak times — so be prepared to queue.

I walk in sometimes then walk straight back out. Normally I like Mace shops, however I find this one carries a very limited stock. I think it’s quite expensive as well. It’s got all the basics — newspapers, magazines, sweets, crisps, limited chilled/frozen food section and a few overpriced household cleaning bits and pieces. Anyhow, there are quite a few convenience stores on the Ormeau Road and this one’s just not up to scratch unfortunately…

If you are up on the Ormeay road working or shopping, or just dandering about you will need to get a bite to eat at some stage. You have plenty of options if you want to call into a trendy café or bistro to pick up a sandwich or have a bit of a lunch date. If you want to pop into one of the parks on the road and eat a sandwich of a bagutette outside you can’t really go wrong with popping into this Mace and grabbing a bit to eat. It has a pretty nice wee deli that you can pick up a sandwich to go from at a pretty good price. Its not the cheapest but its certainly an ok budget option. The staff are friendly and the rest of the shop is well stocled and you will be able to pick up most things for the household if you need a pint of milk or a loaf of bread. You probably can’t do the weekly shop here but its a pretty good emergency option. There is usually OK parking on the Ormeau road and if you’re stuck you can jump on the bus at one of the many stops along this busy road.

This used to be the closest shop to my job upon a time, so I was always in here. I wasn’t here because I liked it, only really through necessity did I go through its doors because in honesty, I found it a pretty rubbish shop. It tried to do to much which meant it didn’t do anything particularly well. The staff were always a bit stand offish and they chose to stock an restock everything during opening hours, which meant there was always boxes blocking my way towards whatever I wanted to get. This annoyed the hell out of me no end. In saying that, it offers all the things you’d expect from a corner shop. Its selection of papers was terrible however and often quite random(noone, not even people in Newry, reads the Newry Inquirer).
