I love browsing through art galleries and the Engine Room is the latest small gallery in Belfast I have stumbled upon. Run by East Belfast Arts Collective, this Gallery has moved from its original location in a mill Engine Room to a street-level showroom just a little further east on the Newtownards Road. Since the Engine Room opened in the mid 1990s it has been according to the gallery«an engine at the core of the development of contemporary art in Belfast.» The range of works on show include everything from oils and acrylics to prints, video, sculpture, arte povere, installation art and new technology. The gallery also aim to showcase lesser known local artists alongside more well known artists with international profiles. There are new exhibitions every month.

As the only art gallery, the Engine Room stands alone among the various shops around Holywood Arches and the Newtownards Road. It is a very simple space but there is always an interesting exhibition of contemporary art on show here. Much of the work reflects the Northern Ireland landscape and related preoccupations but it is certainly far from homespun, in fact it is pretty sophisticated and almost guaranteed to be stimulating even if any given show isn’t really you cup of tea. Here is a real haven of culture in the midst of the busy workaday vibe in this part of the city, though it is also interesting to note that the area is home to a significant number of working artists. Exhibitions here change monthly and an exhibition opening takes place on the first Thursday of every month and I for one will be joining the mailing list as is well worth making a point of coming here more often.
