I don’t know of many pizza places in East Belfast, apart from the obvious big chain restaurants. I would have to say this comes close to the top of my list. They have a good little deal on at the moment(free garlic bread) when two pizzas are ordered, thats a sure start way to ruin your breath for an evening. The pizzas here are nice and they have their own individual style and character, however a tad over priced for me. Unlike the big chain pizza places that are really competitive and have rock bottom offer prices sometimes, Capers fails to compete on the same level in my opinion. But you can ‘bring yer own’ and make bookings for groups and parties. A good place to go if you want to go to a little independent restaurant.

I have just had a fantastic pizza here. I had my own combination of toppings — chorizo, olives and anchovies and it was cooked perfectly. The pizza was blazing hot — a real plus point as so often they come back from a takeaway tepid, which is why I don’t bother with takeaway pizzas much, the base nicely singed without being burnt or too hard and the cheese and everything had melted and toasted deliciously. Brilliant. There is also a restaurant here, though it seems a bit bare and not that well frequented, though it was a Monday night and the location is out of the centre of things, though you can bring your own bottle. The menu lists the traditional pizzas too — Margherita, Four Seasons, Veneziana and a few local variations like Linen Hall and pasta alternatives. If I get another pizza like that I will say it’s the best in Belfast.

Capers is one of those places I’d always wanted to go, but had never quite managed to ever get there, for one reason or another. Enough was enough, I decided, and picked this quaint little pizzeria for an impromptu dinner date. With my sister, before you get excited. I had considered booking a table, but figured that it being a Monday, there probably wasn’t a need. I was right, we were the only people in the place at 7pm on a muggy Monday evening, and our request for a table for two was met with great glee. The poor server looked mindbogglingly bored, and the delivery guy was nervously dandering around in circles, so I was glad my sister and I were able to introduce dash of vivacity to Capers. Or something like that. The restaurant is best described as shabby chic, and very reminiscent of an authentic and traditional Italian pizzeria. It’s not huge, and is more of an add-on that anything else, but rather enjoyed the chilled atmosphere. Food wise, I ordered a mushroom pizza, the sis got a margarita and between us we had a 10″ garlic pizza bread(with cheese’s were we gonna smell good). Halfway through, I realised that I was getting rather full, but managed to persuade myself that I had to keep going. I did finish the pizza(somehow), but my sister was unable to eat the rest of hers, and the garlic pizza bread was still half there. The amiable waitress was very agreeable and helpful, and really couldn’t do enough for us. She even provided us with a pizza box for our remaining pizza(and yes, we did get a fair few funny looks on the bus home). Good pizza for a decent price, no frills, no spills(except a wee bit of water on the table), and not too many thrills either(except on the behalf of those who worked there). But you know what? I liked it. I really did.

Capers is a small restaurant with friendly staff. The typical food here is pizza but some alternatives are available. The pizzas are great. Good size for a pizza each or sharing with side orders. Ingredients are good quality and the pizzas are always well cooked. Never underdone and rarely overdone. Would wholeheartedly recommend to anyone looking for a good pizza in a casual setting.

Aaaah, Capers. Sadly I am old enough to remember the original Capers on Great Victoria Street from my sixth form days. If you’d been to Capers, you were Officially Cool. That restaurant closed and Capers moved to its current smaller site at Ballyhackamore. Capers is the ideal spot for when you have some month left at the end of the money. It’s not licensed so you have the pleasure of bringing your own wine or beer. If you go for a 10 inch pizza which is plenty for one, you’ll only pay about £6−8 each, with chips and garlic bread at about £2 each. This is a really small restaurants and there isn’t much apart from pizza on the menu — just a couple of pasta dishes and chicken nuggets for the freakish few kids who don’t like pizza. I’m delighted to report that the pizzas are just as good as they always were — thin crispy bases and load of cheese plus whatever topping you choose in a generous helping. Another bonus for me is that you can have your pizza made with cheddar as I’m not a big mozzarella fan. If you’re planning to go on a particular night, make sure you book as this little gem fills up fast at weekends as it really is a cheap, cheerful and fun venue. Great for kids too.
