A hidden club that you’d miss if you blinked whilst walking past it, Sub 13 is located downstairs underneath a row of shops and restaurants, and is only marked by a small sandwich board outside with its name on. But we decided to head in, as it didn’t look too cheap and trendy, and we weren’t disappointed. It’s a comfortable, cosy club with nice décor in a relaxed style. Definitely not trying too hard, but still getting it just right. There is just one small bar, with only room for a few people around it. Sub 13 is definitely a drinker’s bar, and a bar for friends — it’s not the place to grab an anti-freeze coloured WKD and be noticed. It operates on the principle of lots of little tucked away rooms, nooks and crannys to hide your group away and have a nice chat. The music is jazzy/bluesy, not over powering and not cheesy. The drinks are expensive — around £8 for a cocktail, which is fine if you’re in NYC and it’s been sieved through a platinum martini pour. But the cocktails here were nothing special, though both barman and manager made a great show of making them. Really, it just took a long time, and the end result was lacklustre. Eventually we went to vodka and tonics, for the same price, but with much more alcohol, and some nice Grey Goose or Absolut. The nice thing about the cocktails is that they weren’t made to measure — a careful, wobbly pour of 35 ml takes some of the magic away from cocktail making, so it was nice to see the barman just put a great dirty slug of vodka in the glass, and properly lemonung the rim of the glass as well. The smoking area/garden is very nice, coming up some stairs to a terraced area with tables and chairs. But the really special bits are the little tucked away rooms with fab candle light, gorgeous comfy leather sofas and intriguing patterned wall paper. An excellent venue for a party, a works event, or even an intimate chat with a few friends or a lover. Sub 13 gets a definite recommend from this reviewer!

Hidden away at the top of Milsom Street on George Street underneath the Slug and Lettuce is Sub 13 a cosy little bar underground with a labyrinth of rooms to hide away in and good drinks served. They do cocktails here as well as beers, wines and spirits a bit of a Friday night after work place and popular with a younger crown as well Sub 13 attracts people who like a drink in a relaxed, fun atmosphere to while away the hours with friends. Drinks are on the pricey side, there is also an outside area through the bar at the back. Gets pretty busy on the evenings and at weekends.
