Tucked away on a busy. quiet road! It doesn’t take much to persuade me me to lunch/dine here. Never been disappointed. On entry,(watch your head), you can feel the warm atmosphere. The food is first class, but be prepared to pay for it. Well kept ales/beers It’s just nice to be in here!

This is a really good traditional pub — all beams and a lovely log fire hissing in the grate, with a proper pub carpet. There is a beautiful terraced garden with great views across the South Downs. We didn’t eat, but the menu looks pretty comprehensive. All in all, a definate winner and highly reccomended.

We did an out and return walk today from Upwaltham to Houghton in an effort to walk off all the good food and drink we had consumed at yesterdays wedding celbrations. This was our lunch time stop and it’s a very nice little boozer. It was frequented by plenty of locals and a good number of walkers, being ten minutes off the South Downs Way. There were three well kept cask beers to make your choice from; my pint of Ringwood Best was crystal clear and went down very well. Roast dinners seemed to be very popular, at £12.95 a go, and they looked as big as the side of a barn. However, we felt the need to go off piste and the friendly, accomodating staff assured us that sharing one Ramblers Platter between two was no problem. It came on a wooden board packed with a Pork Pie, a couple of wedges of blue cheese, a large slice of ham, coleslaw, potato salad, mixed salad, pickled onion, standard pickle, lovely granary bread and quite possibly some other bits and pieces. More than enough for two hungry walkers and highly recommended. They have a large garden and a conservatory overlooking the South Downs. The bar area is quite cosy and has a real fire, it was pretty busy by the time we left at 2pm so you might want to book or get here early on a Sunday.
