My dad has a real talent of talking me and my sisters into some horrendous boat-related activities. He’s a boat lover and a fisherman at heart(though thankfully not for a living…) and he jumps at any chance to get out on the great, blue sea. Me, on the other hand? I hate boats. And the sea. And fish. The last boat trip I went on ended in a rather unpleasant incident involving vomit and dolphins. More specifically, vomiting onto them. Poor little unsuspecting fellows. So, when my dad batted his eyelids and asked if I wanted to take a boat trip to the Isle of May over the weekend, I was less than impressed. That being said, it was a glorious day in Scotland and, bless him, my dad was mega keen, so off we went, down to the Anstruther harbour to board the boat. The boat can fit about 100 people on and, much to my relief, you’re not handed any form of life-jacket when boarding, which relaxed me into the realisation that this was not going to be a rough ride. The staff were very friendly and — dare I say it — I actually quite enjoyed the boat trip there and back. The seats were comfy and dry, there was plenty of space for everyone and there was even a nice little café/bar so people could eat and drink along the way. The journey took about 50 minutes on the way there and a little less on the way back. At no point did I fear for my life or feel like I was about to hurl which, frankly, makes the journey automatically much better than the majority of other boat trips I have been on. The Isle of May itself is a wonder! So beautiful and a a bird-lover’s paradise. We were left there for about 2 – 3 hours, which was ample time to explore and walk around the small island. If you haven’t visited then do! Even as someone who’s not massively interested in birds, there was plenty to see. There were lovely views and we even spotted a few seals along the way! All in all, it was a great day out — a little adventure just a stones throw away from home. Don’t be put off by the boat journey! It was really calm and very enjoyable. This company obviously know their stuff!
