Excellent lunchtime venue, the publican and their staff are very helpful, particularly with my 98 year old aunt. Two real fires add to the ambience. The menu is not too big but has all the pub standards. A good size car park helps as there is not many places to park here. Lovely place

I had the pleasure of being taken out to the star inn last night. Knowing it was in Steyning and knowing the reputation that small town has for good pubs I had it in my head as a foregone conclusion that I was in for a treat. I’m not going to lie, I was right. This place is a country pub that served good food in a relaxed atmosphere right onto the evening. Some people might be tempted to use the term«gastro pub» in my opinion though such pretentious modernism would be out of ill– applied in such a place as this. The menu was the usual selection of staple fair, steak and ale pie, lasagne etc and it seemed to have all been prepared by hand in a chunky rustic style. Not in any way for marketing purposes but simply because that’s the only way they know how. Not only was the food fantastic and for that matter well priced but the whole feel of the place was relaxed and homely. The décor seemed to be a tad on the self aware side suggesting it had been achieved more as the result of a refit than a hundred years of tinkering. None the less the result is pleasant enough to cast off any doubts you may have about how it came to be, supposing such doubts ever did cross your mind. The service is simple and to the point, perhaps a little short but when out with a group, as we were, I find that approach works best.

The Star is a lovely old 18th century pub, situated at the north end of the High Street in the lovely Sussex village of Steyning. The grade-II listed building has a small room and bar at the front, and a large rambling area at the back, with some small ‘snug’ rooms off that. The décor, as you might expect, it traditional, with low ceilings, a mixture of stone, wooden and carpeted floors, and lots of exposed beams and brick. But its best feature has to be the garden at the rear, which runs alongside a small stream, and is delightful in summer. There’s also a separate children’s play area. Real ales include Harvey’s Sussex Best Bitter, as well as a Fuller’s London Pride and HSB. They have an extensive and slightly pricey food menu, but I’ve not eaten here. There’s a large car park, and it’s a short walk from the bus stop with an hourly service to and from Brighton.

This is a spacious place. The décor is clean and seems well looked after. It has Real Ales like Harveys Best. Food is available. A bit pricey at around £9 for a main. On the menu they claim there is chunky chips with the fish, well look at the picture and judge yourself. The staff are very friendly but don’t seem to know much about their products on sale. There are two grardens. One by a streem and the other across the carpark. Both are suitable for children. No worry that they could run across the road.
