Absolute gem of a restaurant run by husband(chef) and wife team. Simply first class in every department — and the food was easily as good as a high-end London restaurant. The menu is highly creative and the wine list good, but definitely affordable. The service was also excellent.

1861 knows how to make a Valentines day special. From start to finish the experience was nearly perfection. The restaurant is located pretty much in the middle of nowhere. Standing on it’s own in on a long dark A road the building strikes quite a first impression. On entering we were greeted warmly by name, as though friends had been expected us, and shown to a seat by the fireplace to browse the menu and order. The menu for Valentines day was a very well judged 7 courses, all cooked almost to perfection. It would be too much to list them all but the real highlights were a cottage pie as part of a trio of beef and the most perfect Passion Fruit Soufflé with White Chocolate Ice-cream. The most amazing freshly baked bread was left on the table until the end of the mains and was quite a special loaf. I suppose the most striking thing was how the perfect food was matched by the warm service. Kate, the restaurant owner and wife of the chef, knew when to give space and when to make polite conversation. On paying the bill we were also presented with a small valentines teddy bear, a special touch that was definitely beyond the call of duty. This is a special restaurant, well worth the hours drive from Cardiff.
