One of the oldest pubs in Aberdeen, Fittie Bar gets five stars because it was the site of my single best evening spent in Scotland. The first thing you should do is check out Fittie itself. Fittie is a tiny village in Aberdeen whose basic layout remains unchanged from the 1800s. Walk down the tiny, charming lanes and marvel at the fact that an average of 9 people once inhabited each itsy-bitsy home there. Afterwards, stop in at Fittie Bar. If you’ve got any luck you’ll meet as warm a welcome as my friend and I did when we were there. There are historical photos and sea charts on the wall and(if you’re as lucky as we were) friendly local folks willing to regale you with the history of the area and treat you as if you were family. We each had a half-pint of John Smith’s Ale and a glass of Laphroag, a combination we were told by a friendly local was called a half-and-half. Don’t ever ask to have your whisky mixed in coke, though, that’s strictly a no-no, at least according to another local. Can’t guarantee you’ll meet as many friendly people as we did, but the atmosphere is warm and hearty, the drinks are reasonably priced, and the history is soaked into the timbers.
