This was the second best coffee we had on our trip to Puerto Rico. That’s all we had — a cappuccino and a latte — and they were incredible! Comfy interior, nice street-view windows. Highly recommend!

Phenomenal coffee. You can watch is roasted before your eyes. Friendly staff and a very nice atmosphere. My wife and I both had Americanos and they were delicious.

This is the first café I went to in SJ and it was average at best. It’s a hip, coy atmosphere tho. My friend and I got a cappuccino, an espresso and a croissant. I got my croissant toasted although I didn’t ask for it that way but fortunately, it was still good. I think, perhaps, that is how they serve croissants and other such items in Puerto Rico? I ordered a mallorca at another café and that also came toasted although I didn’t ask for it that way. Anyways, the cappuccino was served luke warm but had a good amount of froth and flavour. I just wish it was hotter. The espresso was just bad because it was too salty. I would only go here for the free wifi if you really need to get some last minute work done like I had to. Free wifi and comfy seating(both indoor and outdoor). The coffee is average and the café has a very small a la carte menu.

A must visit in Old San Juan. Freshly ground and brewed San Juan coffee and delicious sandwiches. The café is very quaint with a Parisian or Italian like feel, and has a back open patio. The tostada and guava butter is a great light snack to have before exploring old San Juan. I also recommend the croissant ham and cheese sandwich+ guava butter(your spread option is pesto or guava for the croissant sandwich). Sandwiches are around $ 6.00 and the tostada with guava butter was around $ 3.50 Four stars though because my sandwich was a bit burnt on the outside Would be here every morning if it didn’t take an hour to get here.

I loved this place. It definitely has one of the best coffee I’ve ever had. My sister and I had a mochachino and my father had an espresso. Both were amazing and looked beautiful! They have two sides you can order from and a small outdoor patio you can seat in and enjoy your coffee. The décor of the place is very nice and they even have an antique coffee mill. They also have baked goods you can enjou with your drink. You can go in from one street and come though another since the location extend into both streets. Very nice place in San Juan for locals and for tourist looking to have some amazing Puerto Rican coffee. The staff were very nice and knowledgeable bajistas. Honestly, I’m counting the days until I can go back! Hahaha Highly recommended!

Awesome coffee with a great price. The egg and asparagus salad sandwich was really good. I love that they did not use a lot of salt. The music was perfect, from Arctic Monkeys, Tom Petty, and the Red Hot Chili Peppers. We will definitely be back.

This place is easy walk from cruise port and a great cup of coffee. When you order a croissant, expected it to come toasted and smashed. Good but a bit of a surprise. During rush, it seemed slow but the focus is on quality so the wait is worth it. Don’t miss the patio seating in back. Highly recommend.

Rolled in on a very warm day after walking. We were looking for ice cream, but that place was closed. So we settled for iced-mocha coffee drinks and baked goods. The iced drinks(and the A/C) really hit the spot, and the baked goods were pretty good. You have to order and pick-up your food at the register, even if you sit and eat at the counter.(I thought that was weird and clunky.) But it had the cool vibe of a busy(NON-CHAIN) coffee shop… and I was thrilled not to be in a Starbucks!

I came here with my wife and kids just prior to re-boarding our cruise ship, where the coffee can barely be called that. I was desperate to find a real coffee shop. The taxi driver recommended that we go here, as he clanked this was the best coffee shop in the area. HEWASRIGHT! I ordered a latte for myself and a vanilla latte for my wife. Unfortunately the largest they have is 10oz. Not a problem really, we just HAD to order a second cup! It was incredible! If your in Puerto Rico and want a Latte, you must come here! They also roast their own coffee

Cuatro Sombras was perfect. I walked in with high expectations as I had bookmarked it prior to my trip. My Unilocal peeps came through. It was rustic and intimate. There’s plenty of chairs and counter seating and the barista had a man bun. It was great. I ordered a latte and it was adivine, it was a nice change from the strong café con leche served all around town. I was also excited to see such an extensive food menu. I chose to order the Yauco Panini: turkey, aged cheddar and the fixins including a plantain mayo that made the sandwich that much better. It was around $ 10 but it was big and filled me up until dinner. Great spot!

These guys are the real deal, they produce(it’s grown in Yauco at this own plantation) and roast their own coffee, which is then brewed and sold at this coffee shop. It’s possibly the best cup of café con leche in Old San Juan. They also have a café menu of sandwiches and artisanal toast with locally made jams and spreads – try the toastadas con guayaba(toast with guava jam). There’s indoor seating and a small bonus covered patio if you prefer the outdoors. The barristas are super chill and bilingual. On any given day you’ll find a nice mix of locals and tourists enjoying a nice brew of fresh coffee.

We went to Puerto Rico and stayed in Old San Juan September 2015. We are from Seattle, and admittedly, are coffee addicts. One of the first places we looked up upon arriving was local coffee places. We came across Café Cuatro Sombras and thought we’d give them a try. We are really glad that we did. We ended up coming here 5 times during our 3 day stay. The coffee is fantastic. I would pick this coffee over the Starbucks down the street any day. The employees were very friendly and gave us a few recommendations of places to visit nearby. The café ambiance is very welcoming. They have the main level seating, some seating up the stairs and also some outside seating. The different levels really give the place an open feel. It was never loud even when it was busy. This really is a great place to enjoy some coffee or to start your day. The Puerto Rican coffee they have here is about as good as it gets. If you are a coffee lover, I highly encourage you to give this place a try.

I struggled with my recommendation for this place, but I think I am going to be stricter with it since it’s located in Old San Juan. Many places around the world have this problem, the restaurant near the busiest areas are just not quite as good as what you would get elsewhere, for less. This is a coffee shop and for the good, the locale is beautifully appointed and the servers were nice enough. But the coffee was watery and slightly bitter, a bad example of what great Puerto Rican coffee can be. I can’t recommend a place like that, that gets so many tourist volume. It’s not a great first impression of one of our best products.

Don’t ask me how a heard about Café Cuatro Sobras, I just know I was in Old San Juan, knowing I wanted to try it. Found it and, as soon as I walked in, I loved it. It’s a mix between rustic, simple, homey and romantic, all in one. Tables bordered by a semi-tall wood wall, with cute cushions on the«sofa» side, and wooden chairs on the other end. Cute middle eastern looking lamps hang from the ceiling(high/low), giving it a cozy, relax, and very inviting atmosphere. Once I was done taking this all in, I noticed the roasting machine, which a guy attended to all the time I was there, with dedication and concentration. You can tell they don’t take their coffee lightly. They are serious about serving you the best. I go up to the counter and look at the wall, where, in separate pieces of, differently shaped, papers they have written the menu and their prices. Some toasts, sandwiches, and more. Also, on the little refrigerated area they have other pastries, and even had«sandwichitos de mezcla»(which made me smile reminding me of my childhood). I ordered a Black Forest ham sandwich on a croissant. It was a little cold when they served it but still good. Now, the one thing you MUST try is the toast with Guava butter. OMG, I could eat that all day long. Unfortunately they don’t sell that butter to go(I asked). I want more! Now, to the coffee. As I usually do, I ordered a Latte, Medium. They do those cute designs I like so I’m already smiling. One sip and you’re gone. Perfectly steamed milk, smooth but strong flavor coffee, no bitterness to it, just delicious. The staff, I can’t say much about. Not really friendly but not rude either. They were polite. I guess their attitude resembles their appearance, very hipster. They’re there to do their job interacting with the«public» only when necessary. Still, the place itself is so welcoming you won’t care if they talk to you further from taking your order or not. The coffee(and guava butter) are enough to keep you coming for more.

The best café we went to in San Juan. Coffee and pastries were both very good and the sandwiches we got to go were both very tasty. We had the chicken salad sandwich and the sandwich named after the place– ham and some nice seasoned mayo. Atmosphere is also very nice, with good space to sit.

They serve some very decent sandwiches here. Also love the décor. We got the Vieja San Juan and Cuatro Sombras, both were amazing. They did take a bit of time to make them though. Their latte was also pretty good. Puerto Rican coffees are definitely on the darker side of medium roast. Their Cuatro Sombras roast had a very deep body but very little acidity. It’s very heavy on the bitterness, something the milk in the latte helped, but personally not a huge fan of their beans. If you’re looking to purchase a decent bag, head to Hacienda San Pedro. It’s cheaper and better.

Uno de los mejores sitios para tomar café en San Juan. También hacen unos excelentes sándwiches. Mi favorito es el croisant de jamón con mermelada de tomate.

This place became my neighborhood spot during my stay in San Juan. I came here every morning for some iced Americano before going out on the town or hiking around. An iced Americano is around four dollars for a 12 or 16 ounce, but while it’s expensive and takes a few minutes, it’s worth it. They make it carefully with espresso doused quickly in ice. It’s Rich, luscious, and intense. Chocolatey and smooth and perfect. The sandwiches here are pretty affordable and delicious. I really enjoyed the cucumber hummus on whole wheat, the chicken salad wrap, and the smoked salmon with pesto on whole wheat. Each was delicious, refreshing, and made with great ingredients. The hummus wascreamy, thankfully not chalky, and well flavored. Each sandwich comes with a bag of chips. There are really two bars the Backbar lab, and the front of the coffee store, with the hallway and outdoor patio in between. I recommend the back bar, which is less crowded and more efficient. It seems appropriate that my sole souvenir from my Puerto Rico trip is a bag of Cuatro Sombreros beans.

Nice and cozy coffee shop! Great to catch up with friends or get some work done. The coffee is delicious and they have a simple but sweet menu. The staff was also great! The only reason I didn’t give the 5th star is that there aren’t any plugs so I had to leave once my computer died :(would have loved to stay a little longer. Next time!

I got a normal latte and an iced latte(mostly because I needed to be over $ 5). The normal latte was really good… and the environment here, in my opinion is super cute. The outdoor area hidden inside is especially cute. My iced latte I thought was a bit bitter… and I’m not someone who adds sweetner/sugar to my lattes… so…
