Go Dutch is an unexpected treat to find in Henderson, amongst Discount Stores and ratty cafés. A store that specializes in Dutch treats– from food to ceramic gifts. As a big cheese eater, this small selection of Dutch cheese wheels was a great find, easily accompanied by authentic savoury crackers in stock. Good goat’s cheese is scarce in New Zealand. Go Dutch obviously stocks goat’s cheese, gouda– even a bright green pesto cheese. Even better than the cheeses was the licorice selection, at the rear of the store and almost behind the counter, like an old English sweets shop. Each flavour has its name and taste(sweet or salty) clearly printed on the front. The pleasant older lady working the store will willingly help guide your decision. A great store to find that something special as a gift, to enhance a meal or for a new experience.

Cheese-lovers unite and head to Go Dutch for the most delicious range of authentic Dutch cheese, cut to your order from the large cheese rounds. Everyone in the know knows about this place so it goes without saying that their cheese will be fresh since every customer probably buys cheese. We love the Gouda mild cumin, and the Leerdamer Kaas variety. We have also figured out that Dutch mayonnaise is even better than best foods, so that’s always on my list. Save the hassle of purchasing all of the individual ingredients and then following a cheese fondue recipe where you may muck it up, go with the fail proof Emmi brand ready mix packets from here. Their Dutch windmill biscuits are to die for with a cup of dutch coffee. I finally purchased a cheese slicer from here too which makes a difference when slicing up from the cheese wedge. They even have body care products and tea towels, all and sundry Dutch can be found in this shop.

I was brought here by two Dutch friends who were determined to share there culture with me «You have to try Dutch licorice», they would tell me. I’m not a big cheese guy so the overpowering cheese smell in the shop is a bit off putting, but if you like cheese, they have a big range, and it seemed like a lot of the other people in the store were there just to buy cheese. Dutch licorice, it turns out, is salty. What is up with that? A bit of warning would have been nice, I was expecting something sweet so I spat it into my hand, slightly rude. But by the end of the bag I developed a taste for it, it is a bit different but if you perservere it actually becomes really nice.

I am Dutch myself so I am completely biased to anything or anywhere that sells Dutch stuff. I love it. This place is especially amazing though as I have been visiting it for years and years now. Always in preparation for the Sunday Dutch breakfast, and this shop has everything needed. From bread toppings to special sauces to delicious savouries and biscuits, and most importantly cheeses! So many beautiful cheeses. And what is so awesome is that it is cut fresh right in front of you, still in its wheel form, and they just take out a chunk of how much you want. It is brilliant. Lovely staff too.

Go Dutch! This is a the store to come and buy your authentic Dutch cheese, that delicious yet strange tasting Dutch licorice and Nasi Goreng… Nasi Goreng… well, yes, I had to look twice too, all this time I have eaten Nasi Goreng out and I thought it was an Asian delicacy… The prices vary, usually towards the more hefty side, but if it is the occasional shop or a one off item you are after then look at it as a treat. They have quite an extensive range too, plus if you check out their website you can buy online! Go Dutch also have another retail outlet in Orewa. If you haven’t ever tried Dutch licorice before, give it a go! It is very different to the soft sweet stuff in the West. This store offer a variety to chose from, ask staff about the different choices to help you decide.
