At the beginning of a work trip to Wellington, I had to kill some time on a Sunday but didn’t want to shell out the cash to rent a car and go frolic with the hobbits. I also wanted to say I’d visited the South Island, but didn’t want to shell out the cash to fly over there. Bottom line, I’m cheap. That being said, I ended up booking a round-trip ferry ride( ) which takes a little over 3 hours each way, but like I said, I needed to kill some time. Plus, it’s a really scenic route through the Wellington harbor(harbour?), across the Cook Strait, and then through the narrow Queen Charlotte Sound. When I got to Picton, I didn’t really have time to do very much, except for my favorite activity while traveling, which is eating. What to get here is a no brainer — the Queen Charlotte Sound Green Lipped Mussels that came from the body of water through which you just sailed. Doesn’t get much more local than that. Very friendly service, comfortable atmosphere, and inexpensive compared to many of the places up in Wellington. Food: 4⁄5 Value: 5⁄5 Service: 4⁄5 Atmosphere: 4⁄5
