The Three Lamps Bar and Eatery was formally The Ponsonby Belgian Beer Café. I noticed that it had been changed a couple of months ago when walking by and as it is in the neighbourhood thought we should check it out sometime. Firstly I must say that they have a fantastic beer selection, especially of craft beers– if you are a craft beer lover I would definitely check it out. There are not too many places around with a selection like this and it is a bonus being that it is in Ponsonby. The wine list is not quite as extensive but is fine. The building is the old Ponsonby post shop and they have done well to recognise the history and have old framed photos of Ponsonby adorning the walls. The outside area is very accommodating with fairy lights, a fire and heaters– handy for those who smoke. Unfortunately the service and food did not live up to the standard of the surroundings and of the alcoholic beverages list. We were seated and given menu’s and then no one returned to check on us or to take drink or food orders. After 15 or so minutes we went up to the bar and asked if we order up there and were told we could if we wanted and yeah it was probably easier. I must note it was not busy being a Tuesday night and there were quite a few staff on the floor. We ordered a range of food and all of it was disappointing. The worst of all was the mussels, which were cold and served with nothing on them. When we inquired about this our question was met with a very awkward response saying the Chef did not know which sauce was ordered so it was accidentally missed. This suggests that the mussels are already steamed open and then have something poured over them. Yuck. They did take the mussels and a drink off our order but it still ended up being expensive for what it was. Okay for a few drinks but I would avoid the food!
