Had a chance encounter with this place and was pleasantly surprised. Normally I like to try local cuisine when I travel but I couldn’t pass up on this after looking at the menu. I ended up ordering the Bronx and you can have the burger cooked to your liking which I like as I hate overdone burgers. I was hoping more smokiness from bacon and a bit of heat from the spicy jalapeño relish but it could be that the local palette desires less heat comparable to what I’m used to. Overall it’s quite delicious and filling. I definitely scarfed it down. If I had known what I know now after my trip, I would have tried the manuka cured bacon, apparently manuka honey is a popular thing there. Pretty sure they wouldn’t mind altering the ingredients to your liking. The staff was quite friendly. They have few chairs facing the street window if you intend to eat there. The neighborhood was quiet when I was there possibly because it was on the afternoon in the middle of the week and also the place was in a residential area. Not sure if they have a liquor license or a byob option, I could use a beer with burger. Might be something they would consider.

Best burger joint on the Shore, in my opinion. I had the Beef and Cheese and it was top notch — pattie was perfectly cooked and juicy in the middle, and the cheese was nicely melted on to the burger as well. Good crisp fries, and my partner rated the Matt Attack highly as well. Will be back.

The Flaming Onion has been on my radar for quite some time. A mate and I have been on a hunt for the best burgers in Auckland. If you too are a burger junkie, then I would recommend checking out The Flaming Onion. Similar to Big J’s, its a small local takeaway — on the North Shore. They specialise in gourmet burgers, opting for free range products, hand-made sauces, and herb infused olive oil soaked buns. I found the buns remind you of focaccia bread which is something I yet to see anywhere else. A couple of good things, the burger is not greasy. The kumara chips reminded you of the sweet potato fries you get in America. The ingredients were fresh and cooked to perfection. I also think its great how they ask for the degree of cooking for the steak burger. It was a tasty burger, but I couldn’t taste any mustard. A couple of recommendations, you need some sort of doofer or burger holder, as they are slightly difficult to eat. I also found that the burger bun becomes soggy quite quickly, so i felt the bun could be more toasted. We all agreed that we would return and make the trip over the shore again for another. Friendly service, and accurate timing for orders. I’d heard about this Burger Bar and traversed the suburbs of Northcote to locate this«Gourmet Fish, chip and Burger» takeaway bar. The menu is not extensive but provides a good range of classic burger and those with a twist. All sorts of chips, curly fries and condiments. I went for the classic beef and cheese as I cannot imagine a burger without cheese. My boyfriend got the special which was free-range chicken, crumbed courgette and homemade hummus. I definitely lucked out — the foccacia bun was a nice touch but my pattie was paper thin, grey and dry as bone. Nothing to report on the salad or sauces all pretty predictable. Ollie’s burger was really really good, the chicken tenderloins were juicy and the crumbed courgette crispy and delicious — the feta worked perfectly too. Not sure i’ll come here that often, burgers these days have a lot to go by and The Flaming Onion needs to step up to the mark.
