I came here for a coffee meet up so the atmosphere was prime for a chat over a long black(my NZ usual). Their long black is one of one of the better ones I’ve had on the island, as it did not have the«twang» of the espresso as evident, which makes for a bolder cup of coffee. I was also looking for some breakfast as I had rushed out so I ordered a Salmon Eggs Benny. It arrived with what appeared to be three English muffin halves, but later I found them to be an actual muffin cut into three: Two pieces with poached eggs and one piece with smoked salmon. Really good, the hollandaise sauce didn’t over power the dish, as they used it sparingly, so as not to take away from the salmon and eggs. A definite stop if you’re in the Mt. Eden area!

Nice little lax out café in Kingsland. Really nice kiwi style décor. The food was really nice but wished I had more of it. The portion is a little on the small side for the price. The hot chocolate is pretty awesome using melted whittaker chocolate. Yum.

Although Kingland’s Shaky Isles isn’t as shiny and new at it’s younger cousin in Britomart, I like the local vibe. Service was very attentive, the free wifi was awesome and the coffee & tasty treats hit the spot. Plenty of seating inside plus a nice outdoor seating area too, perfect for a sunny summer’s day.

We took a trip to Shaky Isles on Thursday. It was sunny, there was plentiful seating out the front but we opted for indoors. Maddy had a banana smoothie — didn’t finish it but liked it regardless. Tom opted for a Mexican-esque breakfast, which turned out to be a sort of ‘make your own breakfast burrito’ type situation. Not my jam, but he loved it. Dave had nothing because he’s probably manorexic, I went for the bacon and egg bap(«scrape the relish out please!») which was pretty good, one of the better ones I’ve ever had. Coffee was on point, service was friendly and good although they were a little slow to come and take our food order, which was kind of annoying. There’s parking behind the building which I feel like not many people know about. Well, they didn’t before now.

Perfect place to enjoy a Sunday brunch or lunch! I went there after church one afternoon and just before a rugby game. I wasn’t looking for a bar to sit in pre-game as the smell of alcohol would have sent me off the edge. Yes I was slightly hungover and one of my cures is a big breakfast type meal. Something wholesome, hearty and not too greasy. Shakey Isles was perfect as I enjoyed the breakfast which helped me on the road to recovery plus the mocha was out of this world! I don’t know if they where being kind to me or what but sitting comfortably in my drink was a chocolate bar. I nearly fainted on the ground with joy!

I am a big fan of any café that serves pikelets and sardines. Don’t worry, not together! The sardines are kept very separate and served on ciabatta with cream cheese and tomatoes. Now clearly sardines are a bit of an acquired taste. In fact, I hadn’t had them for years, when I first ordered them at Shaky — but after my first mouthful I had a flashback to the fact that I used to eat sardines on toast with my mum at about age five. So thanks for the memories :) Oh and the pikelets, you can’t go past a good pikelet with plenty of jam and cream.

Shaky Isles is owned by Max Brewbar and is located right next to their Kingsland bar, Neighbourhood. Shaky Isles is a funky wee place with young chirpy staff and a great menu. As someone who usually prefers to enjoy their food somewhere off the street, you would think the outdoor seating of Shaky Isles being right on New North Road would put me off. However this is not the case. The relaxed funky atmosphere of the café is not lost at all, and in fact, the seating catches the sun beautifully and is a great place to enjoy your coffee or meal. The Whittaker’s hot chocolate is to die for. Get it. And enjoy it. You won’t be disappointed. Bonus: There is free Wifi, so taking your laptop and catching up on study is more than acceptable.

The first time I went to Shaky Isles, it had just opened. Ten of us piled out of various cars to get peanut butter smoothies, which were awesome and filling and a bit crazy. While most of the group also wanted to eat breakfast, I was turned off by the fact that there was a lot of options for people who love to eat animals, and close to nothing for those of us who don’t. I’ve since been back(in a moment of desperation) to grab coffees, and I see that they’ve changed things up a lot, but I tend to gravitate towards the Kingsland Cafes that have always had love for the vegos(whilst also being a bit less constructed in the aesthetics department).

Hands down one of my favourite cafes. It became a local for me when I was living in Mt Albert and I’d more often than not stop in to get a coffee on the way to work. And then I’d also find myself there on weekends too. Their brunch and lunch menu is so good, and really good value for money. I especially like the beetroot salad. The décor is really different to most cafes, with its quirky characters splattered around the room. A good tip is to drive down the driveway, there are always loads of parks out back, which can totally make or break a relaxed morning. I haven’t made it to the Britomart location yet, but it’s on my to do list for sure.
