Whenever we’re out in Ponsonby, we always end up going to PSC. I’m not even sure why, it’s not particularly great. In fact, it’s always packed and a nightmare to get to the bathrooms, which are at the very back of the bar. It’s saving grace is the music. It’s largely hip hop and RnB but think old school classics as opposed to Chris Brown. For me, PSC is a late-night destination and I almost always order G&Ts so it’s hard to comment on the drinks but the bartenders are speedy and friendly enough! It wouldn’t say it’s a must visit but if you’re keen for a boogie and you’re on P. Road, it’s worth a look.

My favourite spot in Auckland for a rowdy one. It’s intimate enough to still sit at candlelit tables and gass bag over drinks with soul/hiphop music in the background. But you can also get up and dance if you feel overwhelmed to do so. Beware when ordering a cocktail on a busy night though, you may get death stares as it takes time. Just get a spirit and soda would you haha The staff have been working here for a long time which is always a good sign, and there is a very familiar vibe here. I once heard a friend who was pretty wined up declare ‘I feel like I’ve just come home’ as we walked in. Take that as you want to. Drunken slur or a welcoming bar. Either or I love this place

Ponsonby Social Club is a frequent haunt if we are out in Ponsonby late at night, occasions which seem to be fewer and further between these days(I must be getting old!). Service is always fairly good considering how busy the bar is. The true test of bar tenders’ service, to make a Long Island Iced Tea during a hectic night, is regularly readily accepted. The place is usually buzzing Friday and Saturday nights, and the occasional Thursday(I’ve heard Sundays are worth a look too). The lineup is usually pretty awesome, with Julien Dyne a notable regular, which I have frequently seen, and when he does is performing live, just jamming with his band. Busier weekend nights tend to see DJs on the decks in the forecourt area of the bar, usually with a hip hop vibe.

Strangely we came here for dinner. It wasn’t the plan but that’s what happens when hunger strikes. So we arrived around 5 on a Saturday afternoon and to be honest I’m not even sure why we picked a nightspot for an afternoon drink but we did. While we were the only people in the place, I’m glad to report that the food here is GOOD. We had a mini-feast of guacamole, arancini, olives and meatballs along with a couple of perfectly acceptable wines by glass and by the time we left there were even other customers. I have been here at night and found it fairly intolerable. From the wankers to the drunken skanky ho’s hitting on my man it’s just not my scene. But when it’s quiet I quite like it.

Okay so I kind of feel very weary about Ponsonby’s nightlife scene in general, so when it was suggested our next destination be Ponsonby Social Club last Saturday night, I was seriously considering one of those French exits. I’m glad I didn’t, though. I actually had a really good time. The place was packed, which was kind of annoying because the front of the place is pretty narrow. You constantly feel like you’re in people’s way there. PSC was playing hip hop and 90s R&B which is kind of my jam, so that was a big part of why I enjoyed myself. The crowd was only kind of gross and towny, there were only a couple of white cut out bodycon dresses in sight and only a few lurky looking dudes. Otherwise everyone seemed pretty relaxed and normal. I had a good gin and tonic and someone told me they liked my sweater so I was happy.

I have mixed feelings about the PSC, as I like to call it. On the one hand the grungy, bunkerish feel it has borrowed from its neighbour SPQR works in its favour, as does the courtyard and excellent cocktail menu. The seats are a bit uncomfortable though so not somewhere to hang out for long periods sitting and chatting. The Saturday night is busy but I found the music to 90s hip hop for even my liking and the rag-tag crowd it attracted also not my scene. Maybe I’ll stop in for a cocktail again but won’t go out of my way to do so.

Ponsonby social club is just that. The place to get social, the place to be seen, the place to be hip even when your not. And although it can attract a crowd that is sometimes a little too obnoxious for my liking, the overall scene is still pretty good. This is because of the establishment and what it gives us. This place has a different line up each night of the week. From alternating muso’s in live beats and then on site dj’s. The place also runs a bit of a grill in the entrance section of the«alleyway» this i find random but others seem to like it. It provides some nice kai i suppose. It is a place to be seen though not heard, it can get super loud and also slightly cramped.
