For me being an immigrant to this country, whenever I go into a Four Square I imagine stepping back in time as it is a piece of New Zealand history. It’s the typical local store, that the staff knew the regulars name when you came in. Once inside it has a good little supermarket, with tempting treats everywhere as well as those little items that you forgot in the supermarket or its too far to travel.

We did our main shop at the Countdown but always had to come here for something or other. Some missing item we forgot and can’t do without. Four Square are a little pricey but you are paying for the convenience. If you are staying in Oneroa you can often walk here rather than jumping in the car. They have just about everything you need — all the staple stuff and more. Problem is, it’s a very popular spot and you often have to queue for ten minutes before you are served. That’s more what I would expect in the supermarket. Having said that, the staff are very friendly and you can tell you are out of the rat race in Auckland — people taking their time and asking you how your day is going? I always nip down here about eight at night and pick up a few icecreams. Very handy.

When I think of Four Square’s, I think of the cute little grocer icon, and then I think how expensive they are, and how how the stock always seems a bit stale. Oneroa Four Square isn’t like that though. It gets lots of cutomers so the fresh stuff is always fresh, plus the prices are quite competitive — after all, it is on the Island, where everthing is a little pricey since it has to come by boat(or helicopter!). Key for tourists is that the Four Square always has a stock of the Gulf News, which is a really handy guide to what’s on on Waiheke. Unless you’re on an extreme budget(in which case you should make the trek to the Countdown), I’d recommend just getting the groceries from here, and skipping across to Waiheke Fruit and Vege for your produce.

Get your grocery staples here! The kids are keen on an icecream, we need the paper and some milk for the batch and don’t forget the weekend Lotto ticket. Here’s my usual shopping trip to Oneroa Four Square when I get to the Island for a weekend away. Always friendly staff to point you to the right direction, prices are a little less that the competition. Of course they stock the good old budget ‘Pams’ brand, which, as Jamie Oliver himself did when he visited NZ a few years back, creates just as delicious a meal as the expensive alternative. We pick up our fresh fruit and veggies from here too.
