I grew up in Howick and went to all the bars in the area a lot once I turned 18… and perhaps a few months before that too. O’Hagans was one of the spots we used to head because we had friends who worked there and others who were in bands. O’hagans is by no means a classy establishment — when we go back there en masse it’s generally because of some sense of nostalgia, rather than the need to sit among classy people drinking classy drinks. Nope, we sit outside listening to the crackly speakers, filling up the ashtrays, ordering massive plates of chips and drinking enough beer and bourbon to fill a reservoir. It’s no frills, it’s not smart and we wouldn’t have it any other way.

Pakuranga is not a neighbourhood I am all that familiar with but I had to pick something up at the mall here so stopped into this place recently. First impressions were it was a little down at heel and speaking as an Irishman, not all that authentically Irish. Anyway, the friendly staff won me over and pretty soon I was feeling that relaxed and homely feeling you get in Irish bars. The food was pretty decent and the best thing was it was 2 for 1 on main meals. Happy days indeed. Apparently, they also do a deal that can get a Sunday roast for $ 12 — good value but I found they only serve it from 5pm onwards. I found this a little late for me as I am used to having a Sunday roast in the afternoon and the thought of eating it at night is disconcernting. It’s certainly not an Irish tradition as the Sunday roast there is normally served at lunchtime. Anyway, it’s a pretty decent Irish bar and there are some good deals on the food.
