Stepping back in time to another place,(I am not going to go on about the amazing décor, you will have to come and see for yourself) I accompanied my partner with work colleagues on a staff dinner to Nostalgia. We had the back room booked out and were given a restricted menu(the organiser had shortlisted three entrées, three mains and three deserts). As entertainment had been organised to follow the meal, the night had to run like clockwork. And it did! Once I was seated we were given the choice of white or red wine. Then down to the choosing on the menu. I can’t recall all of the choices, however First up I chose Ostrich on a burger wheat tabouleh. The others had a salmon dish. I would say Fine dining for sure. Fish of the Day(John Dory) on cauliflower purée, with diamond clams was amazing. The purée was a simply an incredible thing to taste. The panna cotta desert. Heavenly… So, this amazing food was brought out promptly and the service was very good. I don’t say it was exceptional in this instance — I would have expected slightly more attentive waiters — but still the service was to a high standard. This was followed by a stand-up comedy act, I am not sure if this was provided by the host but I believe that it was. We all had sore cheeks from laughing so hard. All in all a great night out, and I will be back for a date night with my man soon!

I love the whole Art Deco era so was excited when this place opened as Prohibition a few years back. We’ve been here for date night dinners and everything is pretty much perfect. The vibe is definitely classy and the mood is set as soon as you walk through the rather grand doors. The staff though make you feel right at home and the little stool for my handbag was a first. There’s always fabulous creative vegetarian dishes on the menu and everything I’ve eaten here has been faultless. I like this place so much that it was a serious contender for our wedding reception — we just couldn’t afford the wines(although they are excellent). It’s great to have such a different and elaborately conceptualised fine dining option in Auckland and as I have a significant birthday coming up I think this is the place. It makes every occasion special.

Visited here a few weeks ago for a friend’s rather out-of-the-ordinary 21st birthday party. She had hired the private room out the back for high tea, and boy was it an experience! The room was elaborate and ornate, panelled in dark mahogany and decorated like an old speakeasy. Visiting the loo here has a sense of occasion to it. So yes, you could say it has a bit of pomp. High tea here came in two courses — savoury and sweet. You pick a different tea for each course which is accompanied by an assortment of treats which surprisingly add up to a pretty filling meal. Come here if you’re after something with a real sense of occasion!

We went here as a large group for a Hen’s Party, and we dressed in vintage theme to go with the amazing décor. We had the upstairs Library area for our dinner which created a great atmosphere. We were all classy ladies dressed up fancily, eating in a classically-styled elaborate room. I kept thinking that there should be a secret book on a shelf that activates a spinning book shelf to reveal a secret lair! Thoroughly recommended food and drinks, and despite our group’s lateness and various odd requests, the staff were extremely polite and catered to our every whim. You simply must go, even just to check out the upstairs bathrooms. Seriously next level, my friend.

High tea has never been so high. Nostalgia really puts on the ritz for its pink high tea events, which, depending on your budget, can include more than just tea. This establishment is better known to most people as Prohibition, but has rebranded. The closed doors and prohibition-era schtick remains, but the owners of the restaurant do not want to fade into themed restaurant oblivion, so they’re making sure they change up what they do. Nostalgia will tell you that what most people call high tea is actually low tea, or afternoon tea. Nostalgia’s high tea is a hearty supper with tea and should be served at a main table. Nostalgia’s meal comes with warm bread and scones(sweet and savoury), along with dessert. You can choose to have sweet or savoury teas, or better yet, cocktails or wine!
