We came with a small party of 3 on a slow Sunday evening. Ordered 1 chicken/pork ramen, 1 eel don and 1 chicken hot pot. The eel Don and hot pot came out within a few minutes. 10minutes passed, 15 then 20 minute passed and still no sign of the ramen. We started asking for status and they just apologized and said it was coming. Finally after a few more minutes, the ramen came and the Don and hot pot were completely cold by then. Ramen wasn’t even that great, eel Don came with huge globs of mayo all over the rice and sad little salad with old leaves of lettuce, and the hot pot was essentially a cold pot of Napa cabbage tofu and chicken. Would not recommend this place to anyone. Horrible experience

Heavy flavours and big serves — reasonably sure they recycled mine after delivery to the wrong table. Only one piece of pork for a tonkotsu ramen?! Service was inconsistent to surly.

Great sashimi and perfect plum wine to compliment it. Strongly… not recommend just because I don’t want to wait in a queue:)

Not much makes me happier than slurping down a bowl of ramen, especially if said bowl is full of al dente hand pulled noodles. This was my first time to Mentatz and I was HUNGRY. Mils and I had been at Late Night Art and had waited in line for 30mins at The Lucky Taco only to get to the front just when they’d run out of tacos. Bugger. Hungry and desperate we noticed the Top 100 Cheap Eats sign on the front of Mentatz and popped in. Granted it was packed, and the waitstaff were busy but other Unilocalers were right about the service, you won’t get any free smiles here! It’s didn’t take us long to decide what to order — miso ramen for Mils and tempura ramen for me. We actually ordered gyoza as soon as we sat down too but they ended up coming out after our ramen. My tempura was beautifully fried and somehow managed to not dissolve in hot broth. The noodles as previously mentioned were al dente but the broth was perhaps a bit too fishy for me. It had a fatty fish flavour, like salmon. I have no doubt some people would love it — in fact, Mils on slurping a spoonful proclaimed it to be full of flavour — but it just wasn’t my cup of tea. Maybe I should stick to pork or vege… Despite the gyoza taking forever to come out, the service was efficient and our ramen came out within 10−15mins. They’ve got an extensive menu and I’d happily go back to try more!

Thought we would try this place out as it always seemed to be busy plus we had heard some good feedback about the place. We about to be proved different! Yes it did get busy, but the staff service and attitude was not all that great, food was average and in the end the cost not worth it. My dish came and was okay, but my partner noticed not long after that the boy at the table next to us had been given the same as what she had ordered. For some reason this boy did not notice it was the wrong dish, and obviously neither the waitress… but how we were to know he had not ordered the same dish. It sat there for several minutes and then he eventually realised it is not his and told the waitress who took it, and turned to give to my partner realising her mistake. Of course my partner told her to take it away, to which she said she would. She returned very quickly and obviously it was the same dish reheated. My partner knew this so just told her that she could not be bothered waiting and she was not paying for it. Shocking service and attitude. Never again!!!

Great tonkotsu ramen. Deep flavor, great bamboo shoots. The pork is usually tough which is a shame because it’s so easy to make. I still come all the time and it’s the only reason for not getting 5 stars.

I don’t actually give every place I eat 5 stars. This is my only 3 star so far. I wish I could give it a 4 star and believe you me I really want to. This has got to be the most affordable place to have ramen. And I’m a noodle freak. But because the dishes they serve are so inconsistent day from day. I mean Inconsistent Portioning and presentation. I just can not give them a great review. Even though the ramen is very tasty and of great value. And they aren’t able to accommodate large parties. Well anything more than 6 is most likely turned away. I have been turned away multiple times. Because they can’t put two tables together. But I keep going back there for more. Because the 12 dollar cha shu ramen is just so so good. The pork is nice and thick. The serving of noodle is filling and best of all. The broth is just yummy yummy.

This is an excellent lunch option in the city, with great tasting, not to mention cheap Japanese food. I have always found the service to be friendly and efficient. Lunch often costs me not much more than $ 10 when I visit here. I’m a big fan of the takoyaki(good to share with a friend) — oh so tasty. Didn’t know I’d like octopus before trying this! I have also enjoyed the don buri meals and the salad. Portion sizes are generous for what you pay, and I always leave full. This is one of those places that if you don’t know how good it is, you might not bother venturing in — but it is a wonderful place to know about! Check it out for yourself.

I’ve long been a fan of Mentatz and often go for lunch. The prices are really reasonable, the servings generous, there’s plenty of seating, and most importantly, the food is really yummy! I love the tofu steak and the veges with peanut dipping sauce. Mentatz is famous for its ramen and they even make their own noodles. Try the cold spicy ramen, they’re the best, but be prepared; when they say spicy, they mean spicy! You can also enjoy a range of Japanese beers and even kids’ non-alcoholic beer(to get them started nice and early?!). You’ll find the service efficient and fuss-free, and it’s bound to become one of your favourites.
