Masala is located inside a beautiful old home and definitely has a lovely atmosphere. The food is reasonably priced and delicious(with all the usual vegetarian Indian dishes) but both times I have been there the service has left something to be desired. To be honest the first time I went to Masala about eight months ago, we experienced such rude service from a staff member I didn’t plan on ever going back despite their cheap lunch deals. I did however have dinner at Masala recently as a bit of a last minute, let’s-just-pick-somewhere selection and the service we received was slightly better but still not really exceeding or even meeting expectations. Maybe this is a good place to get takeout? You miss out on the interior design but you’re spared the service so I guess it works out even.

I come here quite a lot as it’s the local Indian. It’s pretty hit and miss. They do $ 10 weekday lunch specials(main, naan, rice and a drink) and $ 10 mains Mon — Wed nights. Makes for a cheap and tasty dinner option. From what I’ve encountered, the food is reasonably reliable. Occasionally it’s not spicy enough(extra mild when we’ve ordered medium). On $ 10 main nights it’s not unusual for the mains to be a little lacking on the meat. But you get what you pay for, really. To their credit, on several occasions they have happily made me something that wasn’t on the menu(paneer tikka masala, and it is always delicious. The service is usually extra attentive — too much so. I’ve had my conversation interrupted so many times(to ask if we want more water) that sometimes I leave feeling as though I’ve talked more to the wait staff than I have the person/people that I’m dining with. However last night(labour day) it was truly lacking. I think they should consider offering each table a bottle of water rather than filling glasses all night long. $ 10 mains nights can get busy and sometimes the staff get flustered — once saw a couple walk out because they were not served in approx 30 mins. Will keep going back — hard to beat a $ 10 curry on a Monday night.

My mother gets takeways from this place all the time. They do weeknight specials for $ 10 pick-up and they offer a paid delivery service to a fairly wide area as well, so that’s all in their favour. I’ve eaten in at the restaurant once recently, and it was quite nice too. The outdoor area is nice if the weather’s good and the inside is lovely if it’s not. We ordered a range of different meals around the table and got to taste a little of each meal. Curry isn’t my favourite food in the world, but all the dishes were pretty nice in my opinion. We did have a curry aficianado amongst our number, who was less than impressed. He thought the dishes were OK, but nothing special, which I probably have to agree with.

I had an awesome experience here with a large group of people. We were seated outside on a huge rectangular table so we could enjoy the fresh air and crispness of the summer evening. I, of course, didn’t need to look at the menu because I’m boring and I knew I was going to order the butter chicken no matter what. A friend of mine is a tad more adventurous. He told us all to yell out a number and the first number he heard he took as his order. I can’t remember which number it was but the meal sounded whack. I remember thinking«ew he’s mad that does not sound appetizing». Funnily enough when his meal came, the waitress informed him it was actually a very popular dish and he said it was indeed amazing. Too bad I’m stuck in my ways or I might have taken note of it to order my next time. But no… butter chicken for me! Masala also has great lunch specials to watch out for. Nothing beats a quality and affordable curry lunch from here!

I’m not a Shore boy, and as such don’t know where any good places are to get takeaways, except this one. Introduced to me by my girlfriend, Masala has been our standard for takeaways for a long time now. Funnily enough, I’ve never actually sat down for a meal there, it was always a quick pickup of a takeaway order, but the restaurant itself looks great, crisp white tablecloths, and the ubiquitous Bollywood movie on the TV’s, it looks really nice. They are great value for money, especially Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday when they did ten dollar mains and a lunch special for ten bucks including curry, rice, naan and a soft drink! We’d always buy a couple of different ones and share them around, as there was always more than enough, and for that price it’s cheaper than the cookie-cutter same-same curries you get from food court outlets, but SO much tastier.

Masala is often praised as being the best place for Indian in Auckland and I would disagree with them(the best Indian in Auckland is at my house; my mums cooking is amazing, heh). Since most Aucklanders are unlucky enough to be able to experience my mums cooking, I guess Masala is the next best thing. The restaurant itself is lovely — clean, and well maintained, with a nice atmosphere. The service was okay — it was empty when I went there with my friends for lunch but the waitress still took a while to come up to us and take our order. The food was super fast and tasty to boot, and the menu was extensive, with choices from right across the Indian subcontinent. Overall this is a great place to eat if you’re craving some good ol’ Indian food.

It was decided that Masala would be the perfect dinner spot close to home for a meal with my dad before he departed back overseas to his home, so my partner and his mother joined us for a sit down dinner on a busy week day night. I was seated with no fuss when we walked In. I had phoned in a booking for 8pm sharp, as I know how popular Masala is, I love how the restaurant is inside a revamped villa, stunning, and homely. Friendly staff handed me a menu and I glanced through trying to make the hard choice of which curry I liked the most. I have eaten many a time Masala takeaway at home, but it seemed so much harder sitting in the restaurant and smelling all the amazing aromas of spice and curry seasoning around me. I opted for the Chicken Tikka Masala– Hot, a bowl of rice and a garlic nann, plus a side of onion bhajji, and cucumber raita to help ease the spice. Of course I couldn’t resist a plate of four poppadoms to share and a chilled bottle of Sauvignon Blanc to savour with the group. Absolutely fantastic curry and flavour, the service is friendly and fun, and the atmosphere is festive with Bollywood music videos on the big screen tv to entertain.
