Was looking for somewhere to have a small bite before dinner and my friend and I walked into this place and fell in love how the restaurant was set out. Talk about walking into Mexico! They even have cool sombreros to wear super chill and staff were pretty cool too. Would definitely pay them another visit

Stopped here after doing a big walk with a girlfriend, so we were starving and happy to smell the sweet aroma of refried beans, cheese and corn chips after a workout haha We were greeted by a friendly staff member who got us a table right outside which was perfect. Service was attentive, but not pushy. My friend requested a vego version of the chicken taco salad which was no problem at all. Food was good enough! I have had better mexican in my time but it hit the spot and was a fun, relaxed environment and feast. Try the mango natural soda — so delish.

I haven’t had Mexican food in over a year, and it was really awesome to know that this place cooks authentic Mexican food! They give generous portions also, so sharing is definitely recommended unless you’re really hungry… :)

Dos Amigos was a great place to stop for a drink and some snacks before a movie. I ordered the Guacamole which was served with a generous portion of corn chips. Fast friendly service who didn’t mind finding us a bigger table when more of the group arrived.

I am no expert on Mexican food and some people have questioned the authenticity of Dos Amigos but the meals I have had here have always been very good. Mexican food can be different even in different parts of America along the borders(where they consider themselves to have the haute cuisine of Mexican food), depending on the location. Obviously if you are expecting 100% authentic cocina mexicana then you should stop bleating and wing it to Puebla(gastro capital of Mexico)… Being Mission Bay, it does get really busy here and people wait in the bar for a table, so they need to turn over the customers and understandably don’t encourage people to linger after they have finished their meals, The staff are efficient, attentive and friendly and the meals perfectly fine. We took a friend visiting from overseas to Dos Amigos and she thoroughly enjoyed it. The band are really good and add to the authentic feel of the place. There are some weird lizards in a glass aquarium to entertain the kids plus the proverbial sombreros to try on. Good vibe, upbeat atmosphere, good food, good times.

An impulsive night out turned out to be a fantastic experience with amazing food and top notch customer service. We started off with the guacamole served with warm chips. This was awesome and you can for sure tell the difference between store bought guac and the real deal. My husband ordered a Pacifico cerveza(beer) which according to him was awesome. To our surprise there was some house chips served with a salsa prior to our starter. I wasn’t sure about what to order for the main. When I asked our waitress about the chicken chocolate mole on the menu because it was unusual for chocolate to be present in a main dish. The friendly waitress said you’ll either love it or hate it. And boy am I glad to have gone with an open mind because I tried and LOVED it. My hubby tried the veg Burito which was yummy while my friends tried the enchilada and fajita. And as for dessert the waiter said that he recommended either the apple chimichanga or the Churros. We’d have been nuts not to have tried the Churros con chocolate. The churros were warm and soft as a cloud dusted with sugar and served with dipping chocolate. We were in a Mexican heaven and it was so good we ended up ordering another plate. Highlight of the evening was definitely trying on the Sombreros which makes your experience more fun and close to authentic. Will I go back again? Absolutely!

Not anywhere near authentic Mexican. Fine atmosphere. Decent, expensive margaritas. Anyone who is used to real Mexican food will be very disappointed.

Located at the beautiful Mission Bay this place is great! It’s always busy especially when the Mariachi(Mexican band) are playing live music. They have a huge range of very delicious drinks, and if you go there a tip for the girls order the El Torero margarita: P(picture below) Their $ 16 nachos are huge but not so much the best I’ve had, they add too much jalapenos in my opinion but everyone has their own different taste buds. If you like spicy then it’s definitely for you! ;) As for my favourite dish it’s the Eye Fillet with sweet(Kumra) potatoe and salsa from the Grill Menu. The atmosphere is amazing! They have amazing lizards in a tank which is a must see, especially when they wear lil sombrero hats! And if you have children they will let them hold the lizards, very cute! Hahaha! Speaking of sombreros they have a variety of beautifully designed sombreros which they let you to wear, just don’t be afraid to ask the staff if they could give them to you. They’re very fun and awesome for photos! Makes the atmosphere even better: D Only critique that I do have is that due to how overly busy they are, and always trying to fit everyone in, it feels like a rush to eat and leave. Especially during night times. The last time me and my boyfriend went there, we didn’t even finish our meals and they took our plates away in such a rush that it was quite surprising. It all happened so quickly neither of us had the time to act. It was disapointing because the meal was so delicious we didn’t have time to enjoy it or finish it :( But definitely try it out, and before you go make sure you make a booking otherwise it will get chaotic!

Not only have I always been greeted with a warm friendly smile on entering Dos Amigos in Mission Bay but the food is, in my opinion, the best value Mexican in Auckland. Even a simple $ 15 lunch menu combo will leave you with a full belly and not an empty wallet. The food is excellent too and as good as it gets when compared to other Mexican restaurants around town. Next time someone suggests Mexican, go to Dos Amigos, you won’t be disappointed. Also, ask for a chilli Beer. It’s usually in stock and my personal beverage of choice with any meal.

Love this place, it’s our 5th time here and have yet to try the ribs, expect this review to be modified once the famous ribs are sampled. The staff are friendly and the food is well cooked, if you have kids they are treated to view the little sand lizards in the tank.

Dos Amigo’s in Mission Bay is GREAT! The food is delicious and traditional, the atmosphere is fantastic, and there is even a pet lizard inside when you go up to pay. The last time I was here was a few weeks ago when we had a farewell dinner for some of my friends moving overseas. Dos is great for groups, and was very accommodating to our needs. I had a kiwifruit margarita which was just new on the menu, ITWASAMAZING! I will certainly be having that next time I am there. During the summer day Dos is quite a lovely place to have lunch, sitting outside with a bucket of Corona, doing what the Mexicans do. I would recommend Dos Amigo’s to anyone who is after some tasty Mexican food. Also ask for Lizard(the owner) he’ll be sure to make sure you have a great dining experience.

Dos Amigos is a popular Mexican restaurant in the heart of Mission Bay. Due to its popularity, booking beforehand is a generally a must on the weekends if you want to dine at peak time; however if you don’t mind waiting around the Bay until a bit later, then I would say have a wander around the beach until a table is free as the standard of the food and service is definitely worth the wait. I swear by the Fajitas, which is generally large enough to feed two(as long as you order an extra tortilla so you both get two each!). However all the other grub on the menu looks equally delicious, such as the burrito stuffed with beans, salad and the meat of your choice, or even the nachos, which come with a decent helping of Dos Amigos’ mouth-watering home-made guacomole and salsa. The Mexican restaurant is also a very hospitable location for special occasions such as birthdays, with a range of delicious Mexican tequila cocktails available to order at the bar, and fun amenities available such as traditional Mexican hats to wear for a group photo.

We come here a lot because Mexican food is thin on the ground in Auckland which is irritating. I hate it when we STILL lag behind the rest of the world. Nevermind, nothing wrong with a drive to the Mish, especially when it’s followed by Chilli Beer, Margaritas and spicy food. This is another family favourite as there is a terrarium with bearded dragons(lizards) and birthday celebrations are noisy with optional sombreros. The service is a bit hit and miss — there’s something that makes you feel like the smiles are fake and really they can’t stand their customers. I’d have to say this mainly applies to the Maitre’D so perhaps he just has issues. Thankfully the food makes up for it. Go easy on the quantities — like all Mexican food it’s filling and the portions are BIG. We love their Bean Dip and can’t go past getting the Guacamole as well and the next thing you know we haven’t even got to the main course and we’re stuffed. I’ve also had the Vegetarian Quesadilla and the Vegetarian Enchiladas and everything is delicioso. The Taco Salad is great too and comes in a giant crispy tortilla bowl. I totally recommend the Cave Creek Chilli beer — it comes with a chilli inside and actually has a fairly serious kick which is great as I find most chilli beers are too mild for me. The Margarita menu is extensive and I’ve only tried the La Esencial which is your classic lime-based version. I don’t doubt that I will be sampling others in future and of course you can get them by the jug or by the glass, and there’s a huge range of tequilas as well if you feel like going on a bender. Just not when you’re driving the kids home!

The first time I went to Dos Amigos Cantina, I was having one of those ‘I am so hungry but don’t know what to eat’ moments. After walking up and Tamaki Drive for the 5th time I saw these two men wearing what I’m guessing is Mexican traditional attire. They were playing the most beautiful sound from guitars and were singing in harmony. For me that was a sign from the gods to head into the restaurant. To my disappointment the restaurant was full and when the manager said please leave me your number and I will text you when a table is free. When he said that my heart sank and I walked away thinking he isn’t going to text me. Luckily my boyfriend likes to give individuals benefit of the doubt so we decided to wait for 30 minutes and if no text came through we would take our empty stomaches elsewhere. To my surprise, the manager texted us and in no time we where seated enjoying a jug of margarita. I ordered the ribs and these were perfectly spiced and marinated, and my boyfriend had the beef chimichanga. I can safely say this is one of the best Mexican restaurants in Auckland. Value for money and those jugs of margaritas have me coming back for more.

My first visit to Dos Amigos was in early June 2010, when this place was just shy of its opening– and I’ve been a repeat customer ever since! My partner have taken quite a few friends here and made them fans of the cantina too. The place is very lively and accommodates pretty well for groups but can be a tight squeeze on busy nights! So booking would be essential as you don’t want to miss out. Birthdays at Dos Amigos are always a great sight, with a small mariachi band singing happy birthday in big, colourful sombreros and insisting on a shot or two for the lucky birthday boy or girl. My favorite dish is their chicken quesadilla, I highly recommend this for a first timer at Dos Amigos, its a great way to enhance your Mexican food palette and its full of flavour(and cheese!). I commend them on their work with their churros, they are a work of art! One of the best in Auckland, and the recipe has stayed the same since its opening. Their deep fried ice cream also deserves an honorable mention. The owners of Dos Amigos are truly dedicated and that is seen in their menu and their establishment– a great stop in Mission Bay!
