I stopped into Angkor Bakery today as I had a few minutes to tie me over whilst I waited for the nearby bus. I like caramel slice, and they had a large tray in the shop window and in the glass cabinet, so I figured they must be popular. They also cost less than $ 2, very good price. They have a nice little seat bench outside, so I sat down and was about to munch into my sweet treat when I saw the bus in the corner of my eye — they were early! So I slid my caramel slice back into the paper bag and ran! So, at home I ate my slice, although was a bit put off at the start with the amount of oil that had leaked into the paper bag, my poor arteries! It had a very crumbly base that was annoying, but the topping made up for that — the caramel wasn’t over the top in sweetness which was great; I had one from a bakery a few weeks back in Glen Eden and I literally couldn’t eat it all in one go it was so sickly. This one was not too sweet, just right in that department. The topping was soft chocolate icing, not hard like many others. .Thats about it for my first experience of this little bakery in the heart of Pt Chev.

This is an establishment of the Pt Chev shops — I’ve been coming here as long as I can remember, first to get mince and cheese pies as a kid, and then later to get steak and cheese pies once I was old enough to realise that they were obviously superior. They do the usual range of breads and baked treats, sweet and savoury. All of them are nice and fresh, and the staff are always friendly and welcoming. There are many reasons why this place has lasted and stayed popular for as long as it has, and it’s a credit to them that they’ve kept up their high quality for so long.

I stopped at this little bakery on my way to Point Chevalier beach because my friends and I all had a craving for pie. Luckily, the pies here at Angkor Bakery didn’t disappoint. I had the chicken one and I was a bit dubious about it as I’m a bit funny about eating anything other than breast meat, but I needn’t have worried, the chicken was clearly all good quality breast accompanied by nice vegetables in a light gravy. My friend had the beef and mushroom and enjoyed it so much he ended up having two. The Chinese lady(I asked her if she was Cambodian as it was«Angkor» bakery but she said no!) serving us behind the counter was super friendly and kept trying to flog us doughnuts for $ 1 each! Love a bit of banter with my pie. They are obviously really hard-working, the lady told us that she worked 7 days a week in there, so it’s nice to know your money is doing some good for nice people.
