Great restaurant! Excellent Mexican food with a delightful twist. Had two main dishes and an appetizer… all excellent. Friendly helpful staff, clean well decorated, best mole traditional!

We dined here last week and ordered a variety of dishes. The corn fungus appetizer was interesting. The rest of the meal didn’t live up to the reputation. We ordered a couple of pitchers of lemonade which was mostly ice cubes. The salads were very average. We all thought it was over priced and over-rated. It was also disappointing to only see other Americans dining there.

Recommended by a foodie group back home, I decided it was a must see on my Spring Break trip to Puerto Vallarta. The Red Cabbage did not disappoint. Located in a tiny neighborhood off the beaten track, one walks in to immediately find a dozen plus Frida Kahlo pictures staring you down. The waitstaff is friendly and gets the drinks with prompt efficiency that is so appreciated in a country that seems to always run a bit slow. I was so enthralled by the menu I almost ordered two items but alas common sense prevailed. The Chile de Negrinos(if I said that right) was a cold chile stuffed with a mix of meat and veggies and covered in a cream sauce. It was the right amount of sweet and spicy and I can easily see why it’s their most popular item.

So if you are *not* vegetarian or vegan, this place is fabulous. The food is absolutely divine, as is the service. If you *are* vegetarian or vegan, BEWARE. Virtually everything on their vegetarian menu is made with chicken stock. We pulled the owner aside and asked some questions about the mole tacos, and we asked if there was chicken stock in the mole. Turns out– yes. Same for the tortilla soup, the rice, the salsa on the chile rellenos, etc. The owner stated that she was trying to give vegetarians more options, but doing that by tricking them into eating meat isn’t really giving them more options. . To their credit, they did end up making me a new sauce for my chile relleno that didn’t have chicken in it, but if we hadn’t asked as many questions as we did– I’d have ended up eating chicken. Again, service is great here, food is great here, etc. But they are lying through their teeth on the vegetarian menu, and they know it. So be careful if you have a restricted diet.

Fantastic dinner last night at Red Cabbage. Place was completely packed on a Monday night. Thought we could just show up an hour early… Um, no. But whiling away our wait with amazing margaritas was hardly a problem. Our vegetarian friend was delighted by the tortilla soup, and my carnivore wife and I were utterly thrilled by the chilis stuffed with ground meat and carrots. Pork shanks weren’t quite as sensational and we wish we’d gone for the mole.

I have never had a bad dish at the Red Cabbage. Everything is gourmet quality. Peanut soup is a treat and the pork dishes are amazingly tender. There are at least three mole dishes which is made from scratch using 25 ingredients. The desert selections are extensive. Four or five flavors of ice cream(coconut being my favorite), bananas foster, flan,. .. The staff is very attentive and polite.

We had three entrées, I loved my chicken OAXACE, and the Chechen was great. The Veracruz Mahi was bland but the dish generally is bland.(Poor choice by Jeff). The service was great and the margarita’s where strong.

A rare truly great restaurant. It has great food, great atmosphere, and great service. Red cabbage is one of two restaurants the you must visit while you are in PV. My recommendation is to get something on the menu you have not heard of before. Everything is delicious.

Certainly a lil’ off the beaten path but well worth it. It’s difficult to recommend one specific dish. We came here with a group of six and I tasted everything and everything was absolutely wonderful. My recommendation is to let the incredibly attentive staff help you choose a favorite. Fair warning, you’ll take a step(a small one) into a non-touristy area of PV, and this place doesn’t take credit cards(though the exchange rate they gave us for our dollars since we didn’t have enough pesos wasn’t too shabby). Strong, but delicious margaritas. Not to be missed!

Omg can I say this place was amazing. The Chiles Rellenos En Nogada were simply amazing. Filled with lots of flavors that there was literally Fiesta in my mouth(No Joke). When they came out I was expecting a hot plate but I was pleasantly surprised. IT was actually fresh and ITWASAMAZING! The location is not hard to find considering your map it before you go. It’s next to the river and there is always a little boy or girl sitting out front who opens your vehicle door and greets you. Charming! Speaking of charming this place is so tastefully designed and decorated that you feel you’ve entered Frida Kahlo’s house to have dinner. Lots of paintings and very colorful. Oh I simply loved this place. I can’t wait to come back to Vallarta just to ruturn here. I was delighted to have discovered this prime restaurant.

I’ve been coming to Lola’s little spot for many, many years. It simply wouldn’t be a trip to Vallarta without a visit here. Yes, it is off the beaten path back in a somewhat sketchy neighborhood but I’ve walked it from the Zona Romantica by myself many times without a problem but you can cab or bus it easily enough. And, I think it’s just unique enough to go to the trouble. To be honest we had just about given up on this place a few years back. It was getting pretty worn out looking, no A. C., and the food was feeling tired. She has remodeled and it looks great, there is A. C. in hot weather and someone has breathed new life into the old menu. Food this time was absolutely back on track — very good representations of many of the Mexican classics. The black bean soup, spinach(cooked) salad, guacamole, chiles rellenos, carne en su jugo, ribs, fish — all just excellent. Don’t miss the chiles en nogada — they’re famous for this very traditional, labor intensive holiday(Mexican Independence day because it’s the colors of the Mexican flag) dish. The margaritas are the best in Vallarta — no more than 2 though — they’re strong. Place is an eclectic mix of Frieda Kahlo meets old Hollywood. Fun and lively — always make a reservation. Prices are not cheap but not extravagant. You should try it at least once because it is so Puerto Vallarta.

This place rocks! I do not like mole, in general. And this place has mole that makes my eyes roll back into my head. Carnitas were simply delicious. Dinning here is a must every visit.

My wife and I were staying nearby and went after reading the great reviews. We had dinner on March 14,2015. My wife had their Mexican Plate and later she got food poisoning that lasted four days. Some other people we talked to who ate there that same night both had the Mexican Plate both got very sick. Every place can have a bad nite so beware. Oh yea I had the pork ribs and they were great.

We book a dinner at the Red Cabbage every trip to Puerto Vallarta. The restaurant’s location, atmosphere, people, and food are genuine and an excellent change from the excellent, but too-similar, Gringo Vallarta spots. The menu is deceptively simple with basic vegetarian, chicken, beef, and fish choices. What makes each entrée are the sauces, chilies, and spices that change the chicken into a! Wow! mole. … or nut and cream sauce … or a genuinely hot sauce! The restaurant is located in a residential area not on the tourist path. Fun. The décor and staff are bright, authentically Mexican, and homey. Often the owner visits from table to table, and all of the workers make you feel welcome. Now, I am a fan of the Zona Romantica and its reliable, clean, tourist-friendly hot spots. But, those restaurants are very similar. For a unique treat in PV, though, there’s nothing like the Red Cabbage.

A must go to restaurant! The Red Cabbage is one of the best Mexican restaurant’s in Puerto Vallarta. Service is very good. Food is presented with flair! Exceptional quality in all the different entrees we tried. And Margarita’s were very refreshing! Credit cards are NOT accepted! And reservations are helpful.

If you can’t find the Red Cabbage in PVR then you don’t deserve to eat there. It is located in a quaint and quiet neighborhood by the river, just a gorgeous local neighborhood. The wait staff are very friendly and the ambience is great. They have great drinks and sangria as well. I had the chiles de nogada, my first time, they were amazing. I wish I would have been able to go back and try the other dishes. I will definitely return there on my next trip to Puerto Vallarta. Such a great hidden gem!

El Repollo Rojo was recommended by a Mexican coworker of mine as his«favorite restaurant on the planet» and after eating there I now understand why. From the lovely and friendly service, to the stunning décor to the hand-crafted truly outstanding food, this restaurant is an experience you will never forget. I had the Chiles En Nogada, the house specialty, which was one of the most delicious and memorable dishes I have ever tasted in my life. The flavors were so deep and complex and unlike anything I have eaten before. It was so outstanding my family and I came back the next night and I ordered the dish again! My wife is a Vegetarian and was delighted to see they have a separate full vegetarian menu with dozens of outstanding choices. She had the potato and cheese mole tacos the first night and the vegetarian Mexican Plate the 2nd — both were incredible. It’s wonderful to see a restaurant take such care in their vegetarian dishes… something the majority of restaurants tend to ignore. We also dined both nights with our 2 year old daughter and they were more than accommodating. Setting us up with a high chair and a delicious kids meal of chicken, rice, beans and fresh vegetables. One last thing — the Margaritas were TOPNOTCH. I love my margaritas and these were hands down the best we had in Puerto Vallarta. Made strong with great tequila and fresh lime juice — no gross sour mix in the building here.
