Restoran Star

While I mostly stayed in the touristy areas of KL when visiting, I did make a foray into one of the more local neighborhoods in the city called Pudu. This area is full of older buildings and businesses where the locals come to eat and shop. Some of which are setup on the street.
I walked the streets of Pudu round and round several times before settling on having a meal at Restoran Star. This is a kopitiam which I believe is located on Jalan Brunei. It is on the corner of a street a couple blocks off Jalan Pudu.
Kopitiams are Malaysian coffee shops that also have food stalls selling different types of food in the same storefront. I wouldn’t categorize it as a hawker centre as that is more like a food court whereas the size of this place is that of one large restaurant.
I had been walking around Pudu looking for this Hakka noodles place, but couldn’t find it. So when I saw a food stall here selling a noodle dish specialty from Sarawak called Kolo mee, I decided to give this place a try. In addition to this food stand, there were a few more here offering other dishes.
I had the option of taking the noodles to go or dining in. I decided on the latter, sitting at a streetside table. If you do decide to dine in, you will need to order a drink here. They operate like a hawker centre requiring you to buy a drink to sit at a table. I guess it makes sense as the food stalls help to draw customers in so that they buy drinks.
Though I didn’t have much of an issue with speaking English in KL. Ordering a drink here was the only instance where there was a language barrier problem. The man who waited on me didn’t understand English at all, so he called on another person to translate. For the record, they don’t offer juices here as that was the first thing I asked for. So I ordered an iced coffee instead.
The iced coffee turned out to be terrific. And it only cost RM2 (less than $.50 US). Even though I was forced to buy this drink, it was well worth it and I would have ordered it anyway.
