Stumbled across this hidden gem in the midst of Petaling Jaya. A friend introduced this place to me, so naturally, I had to try it out. When I first stepped in, I found the décor to be simple, very minimalistic but comforting at the same time. It almost had that ‘hipster’ feel to it. I was greeted with great and warming staff. There is a basement in this restaurant that served as a dining area as well, which was pretty cool considering I did not expect an underground part here. I asked one of the staff, what was the inspiration behind their name that has raised inquisition as well as controversy. You see, I AM80’s was inspired by the founders here who were born in the 1980’s, and wanted something out of the ordinary for the naming of this restaurant. I did find it a bit comical, yes, but I also find that the décor was a bit too simple for the 80’s, considering it was a period of disco balls, afros, and funky colors. Since this place has recently opened, I’ll let it pass in the hopes that they’ll evolve into their bona fide craft. As I glanced through the menu, I noticed a lot of great Western-inspired food, namely the Fish & Chips, their Chicken Bolognese, Lamb shanks, Big Breakfasts and many more. They even have a couple of meatless options, for convenience sake. Drinks here are unique too, as they had cold iced-drip coffee as well as a wide array of aromatic teas to choose from. I chose the Acai Berry with Vanille tea, in courtesy of Dilmah teas, and as for food, I went for the Mushroom Aglio Oglio while my aunt had the shrimp variation and my cousin went for the Fish & Chips. The helping here is pretty big, even if it does seem small to some(cough cough), it really does fill you up. My dish tasted awesome. A perfect blend of spices, not too salty nor too oily, usually Aglio Oglio dishes tend to be greasy but this was exactly on point. The presentation was lovely too, nothing too fancy. Like I said, minimalistic. Prices here are kinda steep, but still affordable. Ranging from RM8 to RM35 or so. The cakes here are definitely more expensive than most cake outlets and patisseries. They’re all above RM10. However, from what I heard, the Kahlua Tiramisu and Hazelnut Torte is worth trying. I see this restaurant with a high potential of evolving into something big. Really hope that this place would survive. Would definitely recommend this place to anyone who enjoys good food and great space in a good environment.
