Being a big fan of Serdang’s famous Hoi Tong, I decided to try out their competition and found that there were many special things here and many that were the same. There was the familiar pats of margarine for grilling and a hefty selection of raw meats and veggies. I particularly liked their selection of fish. Here there are more cooked foods including fried rice, coleslaw, noodles and stewed chicken feet. However none of them were very tasty. There was also slices of cakes and a do it yourself shaved ice machine that I found to be novel and interesting. They also had strips of bacon, which was exciting for a pork lover such as yours truly. The selection of sauces here are also wider, and they have minced garlic for frying. Great stuff. However, service here seems to be slower than at Hoi Tong and the staff can sometimes appear curt or rude. Like the guy who threw me a plate of bacon when I inquired if they had any more, Sigh.

I swear the main reason I was a chubby kid back in high school was due to the fact that we had so many restaurants and good food around us. Just a 2 minute uphill walk from SMK Sri Sentosa, you will find this restaurant with an apparent spelling mistake in the word Telephone. Probably done on purpose, who cares if the food is good, yeah? A buffet themed BBQ and steamboat, yes you get the best of both worlds with one payment. The meat and vegetable selection is huge, you have at least 50 trays of greens and a variety of meat filled to the top. What I love about the concept is it inculcates team work. You have the the guy who preps the soup and grill, making sure it’s hot enough, the one that goes and collect«berries»(greens and meat), and finally the chef who cooks while the other eat. Staffs are friendly and happy to help if you have trouble getting the soup hot enough; they were also extremely attentive by constantly refilling our tea pot without us asking. Environment could be much better with more air conditioner units and probably a bigger table? Definitely worth every penny spent. Oh did I mention the free ice creams, pickled fruits, and frozen jellies? Fought over the jellies with two other kids and told them that Talipon is the right way to spell Telephone. Don’t blame me for wanting frozen jellies!
