I knew I couldn’t go wrong when I walked into the place and it had a poster of bacon on the wall. I am not sure what it said, but it didn’t matter. They had me at bacon. After spending almost a week in Ikebukuro sampling the amazing Japanese cuisine, I was craving something a little more American. So, Mos Burger to the rescue! It was right across the street from my hotel and it definitely looked fast foody from the outside. And when I entered, I had found what I was looking for — a Japanese fast food restaurant serving American-ish fast food. They provide you with an English version of the menu. You can choose burgers made from beef, chicken, or fish, plus additional types of burgers like Hokkaido or rice. You can even order a lettuce wrap instead of the bun — a nice option if you are gluten intolerant. I ordered the spicy Mos burger and a side of fries. After I paid, they gave me a little table top number and said it would be just a moment. That was a nice change of pace for fast food — they were going to make it fresh, not just pull out a burger that had been sitting under a heat lamp for hours. True to their polite culture, a few minutes later they delivered my burger and fries with a smile and bow. The bun was soft and warm and yummy. It reminded me a lot of how McDonald’s hamburger buns used to be in the 80s. I wasn’t quite sure what toppings were all involved — looked like chili sauce, with lots of onions and maybe mayo? When I tried it, there was a radishy type of flavor floating amidst all that taste bud business. Not my favorite flavor, so I scraped off the toppings and happily ate the rest of the burger. Note: the appearance of the burger looks roughly like the kind you got in the high school cafeteria. Kind of a gray, vague wannabe hamburger that had seen better days, but honestly, it tasted pretty good. The fries were really good as well and I wished I had gotten the larger size. All in all, this is the closest I have seen to decent fast food in this area. It did the trick in satisfying my fast food craving!

During the middle of our one month trip in Japan, my sister and I were tired of Japanese food. Curry, ramen, oyakudon, udon, tempura, and the same meals all over again. We needed American food! While walking and actively searching for a place that served pizza, burgers, or anything that was not Japanese, my sister and I finally discovered Mos Burger. Thank goodness! Mos burger… still had a Japanese twist to it, but at least they served something that did not include rice. We ordered the original Mos burger and spicy Mos burger with fries, and stuffed our faces with one the most satisfactory meals we ate in Japan. For some reason, it tasted better than that 5-star French restaurant that we ate in Ginza, the delicious bowl of ramen in Osaka, or the memorable soba dish in Kyoto. The cheeseburger with chili meshed well together, and the french fries kicked me into a state of true happiness. If anyone in Japan is feeling the same way that my sister and I did, Mos Burger will help satisfy your cravings.
