Some of the best Ramen I’ve ever had. I ordered from their English menu, and got the Shiromasu Special with extra Chashu Pork and a gorgeous soft boiled egg. Don’t forget to also order extra noodles on the side. So after losing all your money playing UFO Catcher in Ikebukuro, go get yourself some ramen and a cold beer.

I waited until I went to Japan to try Ippudo for the first time and it didn’t disappoint. The broth here is certainly better than some local and tourist trap ramen shops. The broth wasn’t over-salty/thick and had a more natural taste to it. The original shiromaru broth was rich and had the right consistency, good enough to just drink the whole bowl. I opted for the special which had 5 pieces of pork, seaweed, bean sprouts, mushrooms, and a perfect soft-boiled egg. This particular restaurant didn’t have much of a wait on a weekday evening and it had a decent amount of seats inside. I am not sure if Ippudo is as popular as it is in New York but the ramen and broth here was solid.

I know Ippudo is a chain, but I don’t care. It’s the best ramen I’ve ever had. I was a student at Waseda and frequented the Takadanobaba one more often than I should be proud of. While staying in West Ikebukuro during my honeymoon, I was delighted to find out that there was one on the other side of the station. It has a slightly more hip atmosphere than the casual Takadanobaba one, but it probably has to do with it’s difference in location. The Shiromaru bowl is amazing. Put some extra garlic and sesame seeds in it, and it’s heaven. For a little extra during lunch, get Set A and you get a bowl of rice and a couple pieces of gyoza.
